UFC 160 Preview: Gray Maynard vs. T.J. Grant Head-to-Toe Breakdown

Gray Maynard is only one fight removed from back-to-back title fights with Frankie Edgar, but "The Bully" finds himself right back in championship contention ahead of his UFC 160 bout with T.J. Grant.

Though his most recent fight with Clay Guida was a snoozer, Maynard has remained one of the top 155-pound fighters in the world due to his competitive bouts with Edgar in 2011. Since Edgar is now competing in the featherweight division, Maynard is a fresh contender for current lightweight champion Benson Henderson.

Grant has climbed his way into a fight of this magnitude by winning four straight bouts. In his most recent outing, Grant steamrolled Matt Wiman with elbows and finished his opponent in the first round.

Dana White, UFC president, has announced that a title shot will be on the line in this clash between Maynard and Grant. With that in mind, let's take a look at which fighter is more likely to earn a meeting with Henderson.

Begin Slideshow

Phil Jackson Publicly Defends Derrick Rose Following Missed Season

It seems everyone has an opinion on Derrick Rose’s missed 2012-13 season and legendary coach Phil Jackson is the latest to add his two cents into the mix.

According to the staff of ESPN Chicago, Jackson appeared on the “Mike & Mike in the Morning” show on Wednesday and briefly spoke about the Chicago Bulls superstar:

Leave him alone. This is a guy who hopefully ... still has another 10 years to play. Let's not put him in under duress that may not be the right time. He needs to have a training camp and go through the process of gearing up for another season the right way.

The defending champion Miami Heat eliminated the Bulls in the Eastern Conference semifinals more than a week ago, a series in which Rose endured much criticism for not suiting up and helping his teammates.

It was more than a year since D-Rose initially tore his ACL in the first game of Chicago’s ill-fated 2012 playoff run, but the point guard refused to come back earlier than he was comfortable with.

Some strongly felt that because the 2011 NBA MVP was cleared to play by team doctors back in early March, he was being selfish by not putting on a uniform.

Rose left the door open for a possible return until the bitter end; as speculation ran rampant because he declined to officially rule himself out and insider sources alleged that he contemplated a comeback before opting against it.

Iman Shumpert—who suffered the same exact injury on the same exact same day as Rose last year—returned to the New York Knicks’ lineup in January, was used as one of numerous examples of players who were are able to return without missing a full year after tearing an ACL.

However, the Zen Master believes the two situations aren’t as comparable as some would think (as per ESPN Chicago):

I think Shumpert had the injury almost at the same time and almost the same injury, but it's a totally different person. Shumpert has been in and out of the lineup and he had some situations with it. But he's also a guy that's not the franchise guy.

Jackson certainly knows a thing or two about franchise players, as he presided over the Bulls dynasty when Michael Jordan led the club to six titles in eight years, while adding another five titles with Kobe Bryant—and Shaquille O’Neal, to a lesser extent—as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Regardless of the varying opinions on the issue, the fact of the matter is that D-Rose missed the entire 2012-13 campaign. It’s over and done with and was as soon as the Heat eliminated the Bulls.

No matter how much talk or opinion flies about this offseason, nothing is going to change the simple truth that the superstar point guard did not suit up for his own reasons in the regular season or playoffs.

The only thing left for Rose to do is to block out the noise, concentrate on getting up to 100 percent for the 2013-14 season tip and try his hardest to win another MVP trophy.

Little Caesars Bowl Game Reportedly Could Move to Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park

Ford Field is expected to drop the Little Caesars Bowl beginning in 2014, which means the pizza bowl must find a new location to host its event. It would like to keep things as close to the Michigan area as possible with teams from the MAC participating.

Why not Comerica Park?

The home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team has never held a football game, but Little Caesars Pizza Bowl executive director Ken Hoffman told the Detroit Free Press that he could see this happening.

It’s my feeling that Mr. (Mike) Ilitch and Little Caesars would entertain the idea of playing the game in Comerica Park, if we so chose, similar to what Yankee Stadium does for the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Hoffman said today.

The New Era Pinstripe Bowl has been held in Yankee Stadium since 2010 and witnessed a sloppy and snowy game last season, but seeing a football game played on a baseball field is different and a nice change of pace. It would also keep the bowl close to where it started and not make things inconvenient for the locals.

So what has to happen to get this plan done?

The first is of course putting together a television contract so people can see this awesomeness. The second would be to find a way to protect the field and not mess up the precious baseball diamond.

While this may sound difficult, considering a football game has never been played there before, Hoffman believes it will be rather easy.

“We know what the dimensions need to be, we know what the problems were at Wrigley Field, so we don’t have that problem,” Hoffman said. “It’s a big enough stadium, for sure.”

The stadium holds a little more than 41,000 people, which should be more than enough for the folks who enjoy checking out this yearly matchup.

Let's hope the Little Caesars Bowl can find a new home and eventually play ball.

Follow @Randy_Chambers

All 30 MLB Teams' Most Difficult Decision This Season

Whether they're a legitimate title contender, hovering around .500 or in the process of a full-blown rebuild, each MLB team faces a number of tough decisions throughout the course of a season.

For contenders, it may be deciding how aggressive to be at the deadline, while sellers have to decide which pieces to sell off and which to hold onto.

Regardless of whether they're a contender or seller, deciding when to call up a top prospect is always a huge decision for any MLB team.

So here is a look at the the most difficult decision facing each of the 30 MLB teams at this point in the season, and while things will no doubt change in the months ahead, a number of these will likely still be left undecided by midseason.

Begin Slideshow

NFL: Listing the 4 Most Overhyped Players in the NFL

In the NFL, there are a lot of players who receive undeserved attention.

For example, the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans both finished the 2012 season 6-10. However, the Jets were the center of attention all year, and not many people were talking about the Titans. There were a lot of players on the Jets, like Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez, who had the spotlight shining on them all year, even if it wasn't for the right reasons.

Who are some of the most overhyped players in the NFL? Here are the four most overhyped players in the NFL.

Begin Slideshow

Wayne Rooney Needs to Leave Manchester United to Become the Player He Can Be

To say Wayne Rooney has underachieved on his talent is to accept his talent compares to that owned by Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and perhaps every player bar one who put on a Manchester United shirt before him.

Rooney hasn't scaled the heights of Messi or Ronaldo. He won't go down as a peer to Sir Bobby Charlton or Eric Cantona in the affection of United fans and his genius is not in the George Best league. But he should be remembered as a United great, whatever happens next.

Let us not confuse the Rooney who fell flat at World Cup 2010 and made little impression at Euro 2012—England's brightest, most frustrating prospect for a generation—with the force of nature who has won a Champions League, five Premier League titles and scored 197 goals for his club (Manutd.com).

Only Charlton, Denis Law and Jack Rowley have prompted the celebration of United fans more times.

To label Rooney anything other than a success at Old Trafford is to ignore the heavy weight of evidence. Without him, Sir Ferguson's teams of the last nine seasons would have been short of 156 Premier League goals and 86 assists (Premier League).

How many players in the world could have contributed at that level, with that consistency? It's hard to think of many, if any, outside of Messi and Ronaldo.

But there remain nagging doubts over Rooney's mentality and his consistency. The street-fighting footballer has honed his raw ability and become an accomplished player at the very highest level, yet there were times last season Ferguson thought his team better off without him.

Rooney was dropped at the start of the campaign, having returned from his summer holiday overweight (Metro). He was dropped for United's biggest game of the season, away at Real Madrid in the Champions League, for tactical reasons. In six of his last eight games, he was either a substitute or substituted—only twice playing the full 90 minutes.

That just doesn't happen to the elite players we might consider in Rooney's class at Europe's top table. Little wonder the 27-year-old was said by Ferguson to be "frustrated" as the season drew to a close (Yahoo!). Little wonder he has asked for a transfer.

Deserved or not, it can't be easy to be a player of Rooney's temperament and reputation and find yourself sitting on the bench or pulled from the field in the midst of a battle. Rooney will be desperate to avoid a similar fate next season, and the smart move is to leave United behind.

Some will argue he should stay and tough it out, but patience has never been Rooney's strong suit. Should he stay and find himself behind Robin van Persie, Shinji Kagawa and whoever David Moyes brings in this summer, Rooney may struggle to keep his feelings bottled. Nobody would benefit from a mutiny, not least Moyes as he succeeds the greatest club manager in history.

If Rooney leaves now, he can do so with dignity and a fine United legacy behind him. There will be fans who resent his going, but in time they will reflect on a player who lent his considerable gifts to their club and provided considerable entertainment along the way.

The one-club approach works for some players, but in the case of Rooney, a new environment may be exactly what he needs to become the player we always thought he would be. A new challenge, in a new league, would instill a new sense of purpose in him.

Maybe he's gotten too comfortable at United. Maybe he's stopped developing as a player. Maybe the learning process needs to start all over again.

Rooney needs to change something or risk seeing out the remainder of his peak years without truly touching the heights he's capable of. A move would be a risk, but the potential reward is his further evolution and the chance to truly claim his place among the best players in the world.

When you weigh up the pros and cons, it's a risk worth taking.

Follow @willtidey

5 NHL Playoff Stars Fans Love to Hate

There are some stars playing in the 2013 NHL playoffs that are hard to hate. Who honestly wants to see either Jarome Iginla or Daniel Alfredsson eliminated from contention, denied a Stanley Cup championship once again?

On the other hand, there are several players that haven't done much to endear themselves to fans around the league.

Whether it's a lingering reputation from a player's younger years or perceived heinous acts of brutality, there are a handful of guys still vying for the Cup that some fans loathe to their very cores.

Begin Slideshow

NBA Draft 2013: Sharpshooters Who Will Work Their Way into the 1st Round

When it comes to the NBA draft, the average fan perceives the process as one of maximizing value and landing the best player available. Outside of the lottery, however, the strategy often changes as the stars disappear and teams target the players that fit their most specific needs.

In 2013, those needs will be filled with one of the most valuable breeds of player possible—shooters.

Players ranging from Ben McLemore to Glen Rice Jr. appear to have solidified their status as top-30 selections. With that being said, countless shooters appear to be on the bubble, thus creating the notion that they will fall out of the top 30.

Here's who will find their way back in and why they'll do it.

Reggie Bullock, North Carolina Tar Heels

Position: Small Forward

Height & Weight: 6'7", 200 pounds, 6'9" wingspan

2012-13 3PT FG%: 43.6 (88-202)

Clinching Factor: Defensive Versatility

Reggie Bullock is one of the most intriguing shooters in the 2013 NBA draft. Not only is he a 43.6 percent shooter from beyond the arc, but he stands at 6'7" with a 6'9" wingspan.

Bullock can light it up from beyond the arc and, paired with NBA-caliber athleticism, has the high rise, quick release and length to finish over the competition.

The key for Bullock is that he's more than just another shooter, as his length and athleticism permit high defensive potential. For that reason, Bullock has a higher probability to become a consistent rotational option than the average marksman.

In fact, Bullock is one of the few three-point specialists with the upside to start in the NBA.

Even if he is to remain a bench player throughout the duration of his career, the combination of defensive prowess and three-point ability is a rare combination in the NBA. Those who do possess those collective traits often carve out long, decorated careers.

Bullock has all the makings of becoming that caliber of player.

Isaiah Canaan, Murray State Racers

Position: Point Guard

Height & Weight: 6'0", 188 pounds, 6'5" wingspan

Career 3PT FG%: 41.9% (304-725)

Clinching Factor: Point Guard Skills

Isaiah Canaan was one of the top point guards in the nation entering the 2012-13 college basketball season. Unfortunately, he followed up a masterful 2011-12 campaign with a quiet 2012-13 season.

By quiet, of course, I mean to say that he averaged 21.8 points and 4.3 assists on 37.0 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

The difference from 2011-12 to 2012-13 was the defensive pressure Canaan faced. After taking on a rather unknown approach in 2011-12, Canaan was unable to surprise defenses and instead drew double-teams at every turn.

I would classify 21.8 points per game on 37.0 percent shooting from three-point range as a pretty strong response.

The reason that Canaan is going to crack the first round has more to do with his well-rounded skill set than his shooting ability alone. Not only can Canaan shoot at a clip above 40.0 percent from beyond the arc, but he's a legitimate point guard with a strong defensive base.

A player that can handle the ball, facilitate, shoot the three and defend is not only a safe pick but is as close to a sure thing as you'll find.

Tony Snell, New Mexico Lobos

Position: Small Forward

Height & Weight: 6'7", 198 pounds, 7'0" wingspan

2012-13 3PT FG%: 39.0 (64-164)

Clinching Factor: Elite Athleticism

Tony Snell is one of the most tantalizing players in this year's draft, as he possesses the rare mix of elite athleticism and three-point marksmanship. Snell rebounds and defends at a less-than-elite level, but his frame permits an improvement in both areas.

If nothing else, every team needs a dynamic athlete that can shake things up in transition, and Snell can be that player.

On top of possessing a massive 7'0" wingspan and explosive leaping ability, Snell is lethal from beyond the arc. He shot 39.0 percent from distance during the 2012-13 college basketball season and thrives in catch-and-shoot situations.

For contenders that need to get younger and shoot at a higher clip from beyond the arc—and there are quite a few of those teams—Snell is the ideal choice.

Teams that Snell fits in with include the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder and even the Phoenix Suns at No. 30. There may be more established players, but Snell is an elite athlete that shoots from the NBA's three-point line.

Snell is on the bubble now, but come draft night, he'll be a safe first-round draft choice.

2013 NBA Mock Draft: Easy Solutions for Every First Round Team's Draft Needs

Need doesn’t play into the NBA draft as much as it does in that of other major sports, but there’s certainly a place for needs-based drafting near the top of the lottery.

For the teams lucky (or unlucky) enough to find themselves with a top five pick, positional needs are often scattered across their depth chart. But for many of the franchises selecting later in the draft, drafting often becomes about big value and high-reward selections.

For teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, this year’s draft will be a mix of both strategies. This may be the ideal year to have multiple first-round selections given the lack of elite talent at the top of the class.

Let’s take a look at how the first round of this year’s NBA draft may shake out, highlighting a few selections that feature a player who fills a major need for his future NBA team.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers: Nerlens Noel, C, Kentucky

Noel won’t be an immediate starter for the Cavs, but not because of a lack of talent. After suffering a devastating knee injury last season with Kentucky, he’ll likely need some extra time to repair and recover.

But when the athletic shot-blocker returns to the court, Cleveland will be in position to field four-fifths of an All Star-caliber lineup. Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiter and Anderson Varejao (along with Tristan Thompson) are excellent complements to a player who can be the glue to hold the Cavs’ defense together.

Even with exceptional scorers like Ben McLemore and Otto Porter available, it’s hard to imagine Cleveland passing on a dominant frontcourt defender with the first overall pick. He fills a need and has all the potential to be a difference-maker for a young, developing squad.

2. Orlando Magic: Ben McLemore, SG, Kansas

The Magic are in a terrific situation at No. 2. They could certainly use a center like Noel to make up for the loss of Dwight Howard, but landing McLemore would be a welcomed consolation prize.

3. Washington Wizards: Otto Porter, SF, Georgetown

Otto Porter is the kind of lengthy perimeter scorer the Wizards desperately need to play alongside John Wall and Bradley Beal. He moves well without the ball and does nearly everything at a high level.

With Wall and Beal already in place, Washington has a chance to augment an already potent group of perimeter scorers with the addition of Porter. He fills a big need and has the NBA readiness to prove it in his formative years with the team.

UNLV’s Anthony Bennett may also be an option here (if Washington is looking for more positional versatility), but Porter is too good a fit for the Wizards to pass up.

4. Charlotte Bobcats: Anthony Bennett, F, UNLV

Beggars can’t be choosers, especially at the top of the lottery. Charlotte has a ton of needs, and any number of players can fill one of them.

At No. 4, the Bobcats can opt to select the best player on their board. There’s a good chance that player’s name is Anthony Bennett.

5. Phoenix Suns: Victor Oladipo, SG, Indiana

Victor Oladipo wasn’t on the NBA radar prior to last season with Indiana, but his tremendous performance throughout the year will likely now land him in the top five picks of the 2013 draft.

The swingman plays terrific defense and has an excellent three-point shot—both of which will benefit a team that finished 26th in scoring defense and 28th in three-point percentage this season.

6. New Orleans Pelicans: Trey Burke, PG, Michigan

Trey Burke put together a tremendous 2012-13 season in which he averaged 18.6 points and 6.7 assists at the helm of Michigan’s offense. If New Orleans hopes to turn things around next season, it will have to take advantage of value and select the best player on the board at No. 6.

7. Sacramento Kings: C.J. McCollum, PG/SG, Lehigh

It’s hard to get a feel for C.J. McCollum’s positional fit at the NBA level. He’s a tremendous shooter who can create his own scoring opportunities, but at 6’3”, he won’t match up well with many NBA two guards at the defensive end. He also has limited versatility as a point guard and his passing skills need some work.

That said, the Lehigh product is an exceptional scorer who can offer Sacramento some versatility. McCollum needs to develop more as a passer, but it’s not hard to imagine the combo guard logging a lot of minutes in his rookie season, regardless of which team drafts him.

8. Detroit Pistons: Shabazz Muhammad, SF, UCLA

Detroit has some pieces in place to be a true contender in the Eastern Conference in the coming seasons. But if the Pistons hope to bridge that gap in the near future, they have to add some scorers who can lighten the load for Brandon Knight.

Muhammad didn't quite live up to expectations this season at UCLA, but he did put together a nice campaign worthy of a top selection in the NBA draft.

9. Minnesota Timberwolves: Cody Zeller, C, Indiana

The Timberwolves are in desperate need of a long-range shooter, but there aren’t any guards who warrant a selection at this point in the lottery. Instead, Minnesota can add a pro-ready big man with the upside to be a key component at both ends of the floor in the next few seasons.

10. Portland Trail Blazers: Alex Len, C, Maryland

If Portland is unable (or unwilling) to retain J.J. Hickson, it will have to consider adding another big man early in this draft. Even if Hickson sticks around, he isn’t a pure center who can limit opponents’ frontcourt at the defensive end.

11. Philadelphia 76ers: Kelly Olynyk, C, Gonzaga

Philadelphia may be better off letting Andrew Bynum walk in free agency. If the oft-injured big man isn’t around in 2013, the 76ers must have a plan in place to augment their frontcourt, even if that means reaching a bit to obtain a center in this draft.

12. Oklahoma City Thunder: Michael Carter-Williams, PG, Syracuse

Russell Westbrook’s absence in the playoffs was ultimately what derailed a tremendous Oklahoma City season. If the Thunder hope to avoid similar issues in the future, they have to focus on adding depth behind their stars.

13. Dallas Mavericks: Dennis Schroeder, PG, Germany

Dallas’ backcourt is in desperate need of a boost. With many of the top domestic guards already off the board, German point guard Dennis Schroeder may be the Mavericks’ best option.

14. Utah Jazz: Shane Larkin, PG, Miami

Like Dallas, Utah needs to rejuvenate its corps of guards. Shane Larkin’s size may be a bit of a concern for teams drafting earlier in the lottery, but his athleticism and leadership ability more than make up for his diminutive stature.

15. Milwaukee Bucks: Mason Plumlee, PF/C, Duke

Depth at point guard and shooting guard certainly wasn’t an issue for the Bucks this season. While Brandon Jennings, Monta Ellis and J.J. Redick may not all return next year, Milwaukee doesn’t need to add more clutter to its backcourt.

16. Boston Celtics: Steven Adams, C, Pittsburgh

The Celtics aren’t just one piece away from championship contention anymore. If Boston hopes to regain its spot atop the Eastern Conference, Danny Ainge has to find some value in the draft and begin adding talent from top to bottom.

17. Atlanta Hawks: Gorgui Dieng, C, Louisville

Atlanta will likely be in the throes of a major overhaul this offseason. But regardless of who stays and who goes, the Hawks still need to find a suitable center to lock down the paint at the defensive end.

Gorgui Dieng is a lengthy shot-blocker who also has some polish at the offensive end. There are big men still available with more upside, but Atlanta needs someone who can play an immediate role in its rebuild.

18. Atlanta Hawks (via Houston): Archie Goodwin, SG, Kentucky

With back-to-back picks in the first round, Danny Ferry may ultimately choose to package his selections to move up for an impact player. If he stands pat, however, expect the general manager to use on his two selections on a high-upside perimeter scorer like Archie Goodwin.

19. Cleveland Cavaliers (via Los Angeles Lakers): Rudy Gobert, C, France

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the Cavs double up on big men in the first round, especially with Noel potentially missing the opening weeks of the season. Considering Anderson Varejao’s injury toubles, Cleveland needs to continue adding depth to its frontcourt.

20. Chicago Bulls: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Georgia

Derrick Rose’s absence exposed Chicago’s inability to put up points without its superstar on the floor. If the Bulls hope to field a more potent offense—even when Rose returns—they will need to first add some depth at the guard positions.

21. Utah Jazz: Tim Hardaway Jr., SG, Michigan

The Jazz could easily double up on guards in the first round. Their backcourt needs that much work.

Tim Hardaway Jr. is a high-upside selection here, too. With tremendous length and an ever-developing outside shot, he’ll be in position to log immediate minutes for the Jazz in 2013.

22. Brooklyn Nets: Erick Green, PG/SG, Virginia Tech

This pick is all about depth for the Nets. Without a dominant big man on the board, they can opt to add another talented scorer to their backcourt with the versatility to see time at either point guard or shooting guard in relief of Joe Johnson and Deron Williams.

23. Indiana Pacers: Lorenzo Brown, PG, N.C. State

Lorenzo Brown is a terrific passer who can add some depth behind George Hill. He’s not a high-level scorer (like Indiana could certainly use in its backcourt), but Brown is a solid on-ball defender who fits the Pacers’ system.

24. New York Knicks: Dario Saric, F, Croatia

Dario Saric has lottery potential, but he’s also a bit of a liability at the defensive end. New York doesn’t need an immediate starter at any position, though, and Saric could be the kind of project player the Knicks would love to develop for the future.

25. Los Angeles Clippers: Tony Snell, SG, New Mexico

There isn’t much Los Angeles needs at this point. With plenty of depth at nearly every position, the Clippers won’t be under much pressure with the 25th pick.

Tony Snell would give them another high-upside scoring threat, though, and this is about as far as he’s likely to last in the first round.

26. Minnesota Timberwolves (via Memphis): Deshaun Thomas, SF, Ohio State

Deshaun Thomas may be the closest thing to a perimeter scorer that Minnesota can find at this point in the draft. He’s not the lights-out shooter Ricky Rubio needs to open things up, but Thomas certainly has the ability to find the bottom of the bucket.

27. Denver Nuggets: Giannis Adetokoubo, SF, Greece

Denver will likely be without Danilo Gallinari for part of the 2013-14 season. In hopes of augmenting some of his production, the Nuggets can select a talented forward with a ton of potential.

28. San Antonio Spurs: Jeff Withey, C, Kansas

Tim Duncan won’t be around forever. Hopefully the Big Fundamental will stick around for a couple more seasons while Jeff Withey continues to develop, though. He may not ever be a high-upside big man, but the Kansas product certainly has the defensive prowess and high motor to benefit from playing behind Duncan for a while.

29. Oklahoma City Thunder: Sergey Karasev, SG/SF, Russia

The depth continues to pile up for the Thunder.

With the addition of Michael Carter-Williams earlier in the round, Oklahoma City can continue adding some complementary pieces who can make things a lot easier on its talented scoring combo.

30. Phoenix Suns (via Miami): C.J. Leslie, PF, N.C. State

After selecting a perimeter scorer with their first pick, the Suns can go in another direction with the final selection of the first round.

C.J. Leslie doesn’t have an exceptionally high ceiling, but he’s the type of physical frontcourt defender who can log some minutes right away and set the tone at the defensive end.

Do We Really Need More College Football Bowl Games in the Playoff Era?

There is a new playoff looming on the horizon, yet the American Athletic Conference is looking to add another bowl to the veritable smorgasbord of postseason destinations. And, folks, there is not a thing wrong with that.

Mike Aresco, commissioner of the AAC, formerly the Big East, told the Tampa Bay Times that his league was looking into carving out their own niche in the conference owned bowl landscape. The game, possibly to be held at the new Miami Marlins baseball stadium, would be a sort of Pinstripe Bowl South; football played at an outdoor baseball park.

Dr. Fan Huff'n'Puff and Cynical Media Guy won't like this. They think there are too many bowl games already. They think that there is no point to teams going to these meaningless bowl games that they swear they do not watch.

That is quite OK, they do not have to like it. They do not even have to watch.

That is all right, because this bowl game, like every other bowl game out there, is not for them. This is for the AAC and whatever conferences that it partners with to put on this bowl game. It is for those football players, those coaches, those schools and the fans of said schools.

In other words, if you don't like it, don't watch. But also, give us a break from the "too many bowl games" diatribe.

Recent years have seen deserving teams forced to sit at home because they did not have anywhere to go. Teams that, due to different circumstances, look forward to that "meaningless" bowl game. Perhaps they have been bad for awhile and that "meaningless" bowl game is a chance to taste a little sense of accomplishment. Or, maybe, they are one of the little guys and that "meaningless" bowl game is the only actual recognition they get for a solid season.

Whatever the reason may be, for a lot of teams, just getting to that point is a victory and having a little hardware and a chance to celebrate their season is nice.

Even if the cynic does not care to watch.

However, there are issues with bowl games. The act of taking teams with losing records and jumping more deserving teams with better records, in favor of theoretical bigger draws, is troublesome. More work has to be done to tweak the selection process to protect the little guys from exclusion.

Depending upon who the league partners with, this bowl could help out in giving teams somewhere to go.

The FBS ranks are swelling, and there are still more to come. The availability of teams for these "meaningless" bowls will be at an all-time high as the newcomers compete. For those who don't care, don't watch.

For those players, coaches and schools? It will be good that they have somewhere to land after a quality season.

Amar'e Stoudemire Wants Bigger Role with NY Knicks, Not Guaranteed Starting Job

Amar'e Stoudemire wants more from the New York Knicks.

No, not more money; more playing time. It's just unclear if he'll get it.

Stoudemire's agent, Happy Walters, admitted the six-time All-Star was unhappy with the way this past season ended, but believes next year will be better (via Frank Isola of the New York Daily News):

Amar'e Stoudemire’s agent said the veteran forward is unhappy with the way the season ended for him and the Knicks, but that Stoudemire believes he’ll play a bigger role next year.

“You know Amar’e, he’s going to work as hard as he can during the offseason,” said Happy Walters, Stoudemire’s agent. “It was a tough year, but Amar’e is already looking forward to next season. He’ll be ready.”

The power forward's work ethic has never been a question. His ability to remain healthy is a different story.

Amar'e appeared in just 33 total games for the Knicks this past season (playoffs included) and in just 51 total contests the year before (playoffs included). Since arriving in New York, he has battled knee, back and even lacerations, and just hasn't been able to remain a consistent fixture on the floor.

When he was on the court for the Knicks this season, he proved to be a valuable offensive weapon. After working with Hakeem Olajuwon over the offseason, he gave New York its only true low-post scoring threat outside of Carmelo Anthony.

Through 29 regular-season games, Stoudemire was the only player in the NBA to average 14 points in fewer than 25 minutes per game. His per-36 minute averages of 21.8 points and 7.7 rebounds put him in the company of LeBron James as the only two players in the league (minimum 20 games) to post such marks while also shooting better than 55 percent from the field.

Really, that's no surprise. Stoudemire has always been able to score at an All-Star caliber level. Once again, it's his health that has been issue.

Injuries have prevented Stoudemire from making a consistent impact on the floor and also cost him his starting job. He came off the bench in all 33 appearances this season.

Following the Knicks' Game 6 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Stoudemire made it clear he wants that role back.

"We didn’t give it a chance," Stoudemire said of reentering the starting lineup (via Marc Berman of the New York Post). "We need to understand exactly what my style of play is and what I bring to the table. It’s something I have to sit down with Coach Woody and express to him."

Mike Woodson and Amar'e had the opportunity to sit down and speak with each other during New York's exit interviews, but Isola notes the former wouldn't commit to making Stoudemire a starter next season. Nor should he.

Stoudemire's frustrations are understandable, but he has to realize he hasn't given the Knicks much to work with. How was Mike Woodson supposed to reinsert him into the starting lineup when he appeared in just 29 regular-season games? And how was he supposed to do that in playoffs, when Stoudemire was only just returning from injury?

Had STAT not be making roughly $20 million, Woodson probably wouldn't even have played him. There's no use disrupting your team's chemistry at that stage of the season.

Not only does it remain unclear as to whether 'Melo and Stoudemire can coexist in the same starting lineup, but Amar'e is likely to be on a minutes cap (even if it's unofficial) for the rest of his career.

Starters are expected to log heavier minutes in most cases. If Stoudemire's knees cannot handle the workload, then he shouldn't be starting, especially after he proved to be a force off the bench when healthy. End of story.

Well, actually it's not. This game will drag on. Just like it always has. And just like it always will.

Follow @danfavale

*All stats from this article were compiled from Basketball-Reference unless otherwise attributed.

Big Ten Baseball Tournament Day 1 Recap: Minnesota and Nebraska Get Wins

The six-team Big Ten baseball tournament kicked off at Minneapolis' Target Field on Wednesday with Minnesota and Nebraska both getting that all-important first-round win to stay in the winner's bracket.

In Game 1, tournament host and No. 4 seed Minnesota defeated the No. 5 seed Illinois Fighting Illini 3-2 on the back of Andy Henkemeyer's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Henkemeyer finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Minnesota's Ben Meyer got the win and improved to 5-4 on the year. He pitched four scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing two hits.

Illinois' only two runs came in the second inning when Brandon Hole scored off a David Kerian RBI single and Minnesota starter Tom Windle loaded the bases and walked in a second run.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers advance to play the No. 1 seed Indiana Hoosiers tonight at 7:05 p.m. ET.

In Game 2, No. 3 seed Nebraska took down the No. 6 seed Michigan Wolverines 11-2.

Nebraska scored three runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings. Blake Headley and Austin Darby lead the Cornhusker hitting barrage. Headley finished 3-for-5 with two RBI while Darby batted in four runs of his own.

Nebraska's Kyle Kubat was credited with the win after pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out six batters as he improved to 5-0.

Michigan was unable to get anything across home plate until the ninth inning, but by then it was too late.

After the game, Michigan head coach Eric Bakich had high praise for Kyle Kubat, according to Baseball America:

“He’s got the change up as his special pitch and he kept us off balance when we played at Nebraska this past Thursday and he got through the lineup the first couple times pretty handily. He just one of those guys that has really good command down in the zone and he spots his fastball on both sides."

Michigan will play Illinois today at 12:05 p.m. ET in the tournament's first elimination game. Nebraska advances to play the No. 2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes at 3:35 p.m.

How Ex-Georgia DB Turned JUCO Player Could End Up as Auburn's 2013 Starting QB

First-year Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn's motto heading into the 2013 season is that it's "a new day" at Auburn.

That new day features two returning quarterbacks—Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace—that didn't do an awful lot to inspire confidence last year and didn't separate from each other this spring. Because of that, Nick Marshall will have a shot to win the starting quarterback job once he enrolls at Auburn in June.

Marshall, a 6'2", 190-pound dual-threat quarterback who played defensive back for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2011, was dismissed from the program in February 2012 for a violation of team rules.

According to ESPN.com, Marshall and another teammate were involved in theft of money.

After a season playing quarterback for the Garden City (Kan.) Community College Broncbusters, he's headed back to the SEC, looking for a fresh start after choosing the Tigers over Kansas State and briefly flirting with Texas, according to AuburnSports.com.

Let's see, a junior college transfer quarterback with SEC roots coming to Auburn to take the snaps for a Malzahn-led offense.

Sound familiar?

Despite having a similar career path to former Tigers Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton, Marshall isn't Newton—at least, not yet.

Marshall threw for 3,142 yards and 18 touchdowns and added 1,095 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground last season for Garden City.

Cam-like? No doubt. But the 20 interceptions are troubling, especially now that he's joining an offense at Auburn that desperately needs consistency.

Developing consistency is right in Malzahn's wheelhouse.

Former Arkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin threw 19 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2011 but tossed 24 touchdowns and only four picks in his one season with Malzahn in 2012.

Quite a turnaround.

But don't use Arkansas State's place in the Sun Belt as a criticism of Malzahn's success with quarterbacks. He's done it in the SEC, too.

In his first season with Malzahn as his offensive coordinator in 2009, former Tigers quarterback Chris Todd improved his completion percentage from 2008 by 5.3 percent, tossed 17 more touchdowns (22) and an equal number of interceptions (6) in 172 more passing attempts.

Reclamation projects are nothing new for Malzahn, and for the most part, he's been successful.

Despite Marshall's inconsistency passing at Garden City, he earned plenty of praise from his coaches. Former Kansas State quarterback and assistant coach Matt Miller installed the Broncbusters' spread attack when Marshall arrived and was impressed with what he brings to the table, according to AuburnSports.com:

From the beginning, it was a no-brainer: He is the most talented quarterback I've ever been around. I've been around some special, special dual-threat guys. What makes Nick different is that he's got the size and the strength. He's not a small guy. He throws off 300-pounders. He's just naturally strong. He has [former Kansas State quarterback] Michael Bishop's strength and arm strength.

Neither Frazier nor Wallace solidified the starting quarterback spot at Auburn this spring, leaving the door wide open for Marshall.

It's clear from his time at junior college that he has the raw talent to be successful as a dual-threat quarterback as long as he continues to progress as a passer. He's stepping into a situation with a coach and a scheme that is perfectly designed to help him in that progression.

Marshall doesn't have to be Newton, and Malzahn doesn't need a dual-threat quarterback to be successful.

With Tre Mason, Cameron Artis-Payne and Corey Grant lining up at running back, Auburn's offense will be a run-based attack out of the spread. Adding Marshall's ability as a runner only helps matters, especially if he can learn to take what defenses give him and not force passes into tight coverage.

If he can do that, Marshall might beat out Frazier, Wallace and true freshman Jeremy Johnson and be the one taking snaps in Auburn's opener on Aug. 31 versus Washington State.

Follow @BarrettSallee

Predicting the 10 Most Painful Teams to Watch for 2013-14 NCAA Basketball Season

With months to go before the actual season tips off, most college basketball crystal ball predictions are focused on the best teams in the nation and how new recruits will blend in with their respective rosters.

But for every national championship-caliber squad, there are plenty of teams that are just plain bad. These are groups (for the most part) that will in all likelihood win single-digit games and may even struggle to get to five victories.

Read on to see the 10 most painful teams to watch for the 2013-14 college hoops season.

Begin Slideshow

UFC: 10 Fighters We'd Love to See as Coaches on TUF

When The Ultimate Fighter series was first aired on Spike TV, it was perhaps one of the greatest oddities in the sport: a reality show built around a sport that was violent yet sophisticated, savage yet subtle.

Now, after countless seasons, the show has discovered such notables as Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans, Michael Bisping, Joe Lauzon, Nate Diaz, Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Kenny Florian, Roy Nelson and many others.

But as the show continues onward, it is at times surprising which fighters have not been seen in a coaching role on the show.

While the unknown and unsigned fighters are indeed the heart and soul of the show, the coaches are one of the main hooks that compel the fans to watch.

Here are 10 men we would love to see in a coaching position on TUF.

Begin Slideshow

NCAA Lacrosse: Questions to Be Answered at the Final 4 in Philadelphia

This is it. Finally, the remaining four teams in college lacrosse will take the field this Memorial Day weekend at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to decide a national champion.

Cornell will face Duke in the first game Saturday, followed by the matchup between Denver and No. 1 seed Syracuse. The winners will meet on Memorial Day in the national title game.

As we move closer to the semifinals, let's take a look at some questions that will be answered during the first two games of the weekend.

Can Syracuse's offense keep up with Denver?

In the quarterfinal round, Syracuse only scored seven goals in its narrow victory over the Yale Bulldogs. The Orange offense was quiet for most of the game, and did not show off the depth of its roster. Yale has a gritty defense, but Denver will also be a tough match for the attack of Syracuse.

Everyone knows about talented Syracuse midfielder Jojo Marasco, but who else will step up for 'Cuse? The second midfield line is extremely talented and has the ability to rack up the points, but its performance against Yale was less than stellar.

Denver has shown that it can score against any team in the country. The Pioneers have scored 31 goals thus far in tournament play, and will certainly look to get a 15-goal performance from their offense in the game coming up on Saturday.

Syracuse will have to dictate the pace of play to keep up with Denver in this one. If the Orange can win faceoffs, they will have a chance to win it but must make the most of their possessions.

Can Duke hold Rob Pannell and Steve Mock in check?

Rob Pannell and Steve Mock are one of the best attack duos to ever step on the field. They are dynamic for Cornell, with Pannell engineering the offense from behind the goal. Mock has a knack for finding space inside the crease area, and his quick hands allow him to finish in tight.

Duke's defense is extremely gritty in its own right. The unit has the ability to match up with anyone, which we saw in its matchups against their ACC foes during the regular season. Although Duke's conference gives them a challenge every week, Pannell and Mock are in a league of their own.

Pannell scored eight points last weekend, while Mock had seven. With these two playing so well right now, Cornell's defense has not had a ton of pressure on them thus far. Cornell has cruised to two victories in its first two tournament games this year.

The Blue Devils must keep Pannell behind the goal to be successful. If they allow him to pass the goal line, he will turn into a triple-threat, giving him the opportunity to dodge, feed or shoot. If Duke can keep Pannell at X and pack in its crease defense on Mock, it will have the best shot of keeping this game competitive. This is much easier said than done.

Either way, this game should be extremely entertaining. Two speedy teams taking the field is exactly what the doctor ordered this holiday weekend.

Will Bill Tierney make another goalie change?

After Denver trailed by six early in the game against UNC, Pioneer Head Coach Bill Tierney made a bold move in changing his goalie. Tierney removed Ryan LaPlante and subbed in Jamie Faus.

Faus lit a spark under his team, finishing the game with an eye-popping 68 percent save rate. His success allowed his team to rally from behind and win a close one, 12-11, advancing to their second final four in four years.

Faus' performance against the Tar Heels should earn him the start this weekend, but nothing is for certain. The Pioneers had a tremendous regular season with LaPlante in goal, and giving up on a long-time starter is tough for a head coach. Does Tierney already have his mind made up?

Denver should start Faus and go with the hot hand. However, I will not be surprised if LaPlante starts the game and plays well.

Will Rob Pannell clinch the Tewaaraton Trophy?

Rob Pannell, with a strong performance this weekend, can emerge as the front-runner for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is given each year to the nation's most outstanding player.

Albany's Lyle Thompson may have had one of the best scoring seasons in history, but Pannell has the convenience of having games remaining on his schedule. Cornell took down Albany in the first round of the tournament, and ended the illustrious resume of Lyle Thompson's season.

Unlike MVP awards in various other sports and leagues, the Tewaaraton award takes postseason play into consideration. The longer Pannell plays, the better his chances of winning the award.

Even if Pannell loses on Saturday, I predict he will take home the trophy. His career at Cornell has been outstanding, and although it is not a career award, the selection committee is human and understands his impact on the game over the past few seasons.

The talented Cornell attacker has the opportunity to surpass the 100-pont mark for the season this weekend, as he has 95 thus far. I think Pannell would win if the award were given today, but a strong performance this weekend would certainly put the trophy on ice for the All-American.

Tampa Bay Rays: 4 Prospects Who Never Lived Up to the Hype

The Tampa Bay Rays have had their fair share of touted prospects in their nearly 15-year history.

Stars such as Scott Kazmir, Evan Longoria and David Price are Rays who lived up to their high expectations. The organization, however, has seen a handful of busts and underachieving prospects as well.

Without further delay, here are the four Rays prospects who never lived up to the hype.

Begin Slideshow

Manchester United and Rio Ferdinand Reportedly Agree on 1-Year Deal

Longtime Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has reached an agreement to remain with the club for another season, reports Sky Sports.

Ferdinand's contract was set to expire this summer after helping United win their 20th league title. Instead, he will remain with the club at least through the summer of 2014. Based on his continued strong form, he should still play a vital role in the center of defense.

The 34-year-old star said he was happy to have a new deal in place (via ESPN):

Who wouldn't want to play in this fantastic team in front of 75,000 fans each week, it has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years.

This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting.

In the same report, incoming manager David Moyes stressed the importance of keeping him at United:

It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room so I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him.

Ferdinand appeared in 28 matches during the club's latest championship campaign. He showed no signs of slowing down in competing for his sixth career Premier League title, which made United's decision to bring him back easier.

He arrived to Old Trafford in the summer of 2002 from Leeds United. He almost immediately established himself as a key piece of the perennial title-contending squad and has remained a stalwart member of the squad ever since.

The veteran stability he provides can't be understated. It will be extremely difficult to replace whenever Ferdinand's United career does come to an end, so Moyes is probably happy he doesn't have to worry about filling the void in his first summer with the club.

At the same time, United are wise to handle the situation on a yearly basis. As long as Ferdinand maintains his elite form and expresses his desire to continue playing, it's hard to imagine him playing anywhere else. But a short-term commitment is still the way to go with an aging star.

Ferdinand and United are a perfect match. It's been illustrated time and again over the past 11 seasons, and it shouldn't be expected to change when the Red Devils return to the pitch to defend their title.

With the potential center-back void eliminated, United can now focus on upgrading elsewhere in the coming months.

Liverpool Transfers: 4 Players Who Shouldn't Be Loaned Out, and 4 Who Should

Liverpool have been linked with a number of transfers for the forthcoming summer window already—even though the Premier League campaign has only just finished. While it is probable that the Reds will be bringing a few players in, there is also plenty of speculation about who might be leaving the club, be it permanently or on temporary deals.

Stewart Downing is the latest to be linked with a move away from Anfield, after Mirror Football reported that Fulham wanted to take him on loan for the 2013-14 season.

As a senior player for the Reds first team, it seems unlikely that the club would contemplate letting him go on loan, but Liverpool have set a tiring precedent in recent seasons of letting high earners and expensive acquisitions leave for a season, rarely benefitting Liverpool themselves in the process.

There are a few players who fit that profile this summer, as well as a few younger lads who could benefit from a spell away. Here are four players who shouldn't go on loan and four who should.

Begin Slideshow

Paul Pierce: Top 5 Reasons the Boston Celtics Should Hang on to the Truth

The Boston Celtics are done licking their wounds from a relatively embarrassing series loss to the Knicks that practically produced a role reversal of the 2011 sweep. Now, Danny Ainge is forced to contemplate whether or not to put the franchise into the hands of Jeff Green, who saved the team time and time again this past season while putting up 20.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in the playoffs.

If so, Paul Pierce would find himself in another team's jersey for the first time since joining the Celtics in 1998, back when "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" was considered a hot new single.

A lot has happened since then for Pierce, including a NBA Finals MVP in 2008 when the Celtics raised banner No. 17 after picking up Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

Of course, a lot has happened since then, too.

The Celtics are coming off their worst season since 2007, as they conceded the Atlantic Division to the Knicks and got knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.

Where they spend their money next year will be important, and many are convinced Pierce will not be worth $15.3 million next season.

Here's why they're wrong.

Begin Slideshow

Heat Fan Sitting Courtside Was Texting Instead of Watching the End of the Game

Pardon me, ma’am, but could you please stop playing Temple Run? It’s kind of the NBA playoffs, and you’re kind of sitting courtside.

With seconds left in regulation, the Indiana Pacers were trailing the Miami Heat by three and Game 1 of the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals was on the line. Everyone in American Airlines Arena knew this was it—make or break time—and they all stood in rapt attention.

Everyone except one fan, who was busy tapping away at her smartphone as Paul George threw up a game-tying three-pointer.

The stadium erupted—mostly in gasps—and if you look closely in this video, you can see her head pop up like a Whack-a-Mole.

People watching at home didn’t fail to notice, and the next thing you knew, the Internet was blowing up about the latest Heat supporter disregarding all the rules of fan-ship.

Maybe that’s what the hip thing to do is in Miami—attend the game but only watch the score on your phone (TeamStreamers would never do this).

Perhaps this was just a bit of cocky confidence? Some gamesmanship? In other replays of the game, she seemed to react a bit and pay attention. At this point, she probably was just confident the yellow team wasn’t going to beat her mighty Miami Monstars, or whoever the guys in the white outfits were.

I’ll say this: I’ve missed some exciting plays at home while talking trash over a mobile device. That being said, I’m seated on my couch when this happens—not in $6,000 seats behind the opponent’s bench. Those are seats that some fans would heedlessly shed blood over, just for the opportunity to sit there.

For her sake, I hope she was at least texting something relevant to the game. If not, I hope she enjoys her three stars in Angry Birds.

That's not heads-up basketball

The 7 Best and Worst Moves of New York Giants' 2013 Offseason

The 2013 offseason has been an active one for the New York Giants.

The G-Men cut important franchise players like Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Canty and made a slew of new acquisitions from division rivals, including Dan Connor, Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson.

After missing out on the postseason one year after winning the Super Bowl, New York put together a strong draft in hopes of building a contender of the future.

That said, we're going to analyze the best and worst moves of the Giants' 2013 offseason.

Begin Slideshow

Carmelo Anthony Injury Unlikely to Have Hampered Knicks in Playoffs

News broke on Monday that Carmelo Anthony had played through the last part of the NBA season and playoffs with a small tear in his shoulder:

The question is not whether Anthony was injured, assuming Isola's report is correct. The question is rather whether the injury would have affected Anthony in any meaningful way and the answer there is no. If the news was leaked as an excuse for Anthony's exit from the playoffs, it's not a very good excuse.

The injury, thought to be a labrum tear, is one that has been seen more often in baseball, but it is not unheard of in basketball. Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers also played through a similar tear over the last half of the season.

As with Howard, maintaining the shoulder and keeping it functional would be the key factor. The medical staff would have several options for working on things, up to and including painkilling injections.

Injections are, however, an unlikely choice for treatment. Even with the injured shoulder being on his non-dominant side, not being able to feel the shoulder is likely to have a negative effect on the mechanics of a shot. Also, it is not the shot itself that should have caused any pain for Anthony. Any sort of normal, uncontested motion should not have caused any sort of issues for Anthony.

It is instead other motions—ones that Anthony is not often troubled by—that would be the biggest issue. For Howard, the problem with his shoulder was exacerbated when the arm was pulled down and away from his body as he was reaching for rebounds or blocking shots. Those are two motions that Anthony's game isn't predicated on.

While that type of motion could occur in a normal jump shot, it's not normally the way a shot is contested. Fouls occur when the hands or elbow are hit or the body is jostled. The hands are seldom pulled away or back from the shot.

Additionally, the other mechanisms that cause pain due to a labrum tear do not appear to be in effect. Torn labrums tend to cause pain on deceleration, more of a concern for overhead athletes like pitchers or tennis players. There is no motion in a jump shot like a baseball pitch or a serve.

Also, labral tears can cause a "catch" or clicking on motion. The shoulder doesn't move normally due to the inflammation. In this case, Anthony would have been slow to get the ball up. That would normally cause an altered, lower arc or even a block. He showed neither of those during the playoffs.

Now that his season is done, Anthony will take the next month or so off to see whether rest alone will help clear up the pain and inflammation. If surgery is necessary, it is a simple procedure to clean up the damage inside. It is done arthroscopically and would be very unlikely to use more invasive techniques like re-anchoring the labrum. Anthony would, in all likelihood, be ready for training camp.

We're left wondering why this news "leaked" just as the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers take the court. In most situations like this, where an injury is known during the series, it comes off as nothing more than an excuse to have it come out like this afterward. Isola's poor relationship with the Knicks suggests that the leaks could have come from Anthony's camp. Anthony played well, leading his Knicks despite a shoulder injury and showing no discernible effects. He shouldn't need any excuses.

The Career-Defining Moment of Every UFC 160 Main Card Fighter

In looking ahead to this weekend's UFC 160 fight card, we revisit that one special moment in the career of each main card fighter that best defines him as a mixed martial artist.

The moments chosen for these combatants all meet certain criteria. One, they represent a time of transition for the fighters, either marking an accomplishment, disappointment or career move. Two, they are memorable. Three, they altered the manner in which fans and media perceived the fighters.

There are several ways to go about choosing a set of criteria, but we are using the one laid out above.

Also note that many fighters have experienced several such moments during their careers, and in those cases, the "defining" moment was chosen at the discretion of the writer.

Begin Slideshow

LeBron James: Heat Star Statistically Most Clutch Player Since NBA Debut

LeBron James has that clutch gene.

Previously portrayed as a choke artist who wanted no part of the last shot in tightly contested games, LeBron has developed into one of the most clutch scorers in the NBA.

Actually, strike that. Statistically, he is the most clutch player in the league.

Per ESPN.com, since LeBron entered the Association in 2003, he has the most game-tying/go-ahead field goals in the postseason's final 24 seconds of fourth quarter and overtime:

Magic never did it. Jordan never did it. Bird never did it. Not even Oscar or Wilt. Only LeBron.

Not too long ago, the discussion was about how LeBron wasn’t clutch. That no longer seems to be a discussion.

Since LeBron came into the league in 2003-04, nobody in the NBA has made more game-tying and go-ahead shots in the final 24 seconds of playoff games than LeBron, who is 7-of-16 on those shots. His 43.8 field goal percentage on those clutch shots ranks the best in the NBA since his rookie season among players with at least 10 attempts. The league average is 28.3 percent on those shots.

Oh how quickly the narrative changes.

Roughly a year ago, LeBron wasn't considered clutch. With the game on the line he was unreliable; he was a coward.

Now he's a hero. Someone who you want to have the rock in their hands late in the game, more so than anyone else in the league.

It bears repeating, LeBron's seven "clutch" playoff field-goals over the last 10 years are more than anyone. And he's hitting said shots at a higher clip (43.8 percent) than anyone who has attempted at least 10 since he entered the league. That includes Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant and yes, even Kobe Bryant.

Player

Clutch FGs since 2003-04

LeBron James

7-16

Kobe Bryant

5-17

Kevin Durant

5-12

Dirk Nowitzki

5-12

Like I said, anyone.

LeBron's buzzer-beating layup versus the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals was his first game winner in the final 10 seconds of a playoff game since 2009, when he beat the Orlando Magic at the buzzer in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

But it's not just when he's hitting or taking these shots. It's how he's playing on the biggest of stages.

LeBron had a triple-double against the Pacers in Game 1 (30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists). Since 2006, a player has had a triple-double while also scoring at least 30 points four times. All four of those feats belong to LeBron.

And it doesn't stop there.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN), LeBron and Ralph Sampson are the only two players in NBA history to register at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three blocks in a playoff game.

Also according to Elias, LeBron's Game 1 triple-double was the ninth playoff triple-double of his career, tying him with Wilt Chamberlain for the fifth-most all time. Only Magic Johnson (30), Jason Kidd (11), Rajon Rondo (10) and Larry Bird (10) have more.

No one, however, has ever notched a triple-double and hit a game winner in the same playoff game—except LeBron.

Ten years into his career, it seems that we can finally put those anti-clutch arguments to bed. In fact, it seems they never should have be viable arguments at all. Not when he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers and not now that he's with the star-studded Miami Heat.

They were myths. Now they're debunked myths.

"I mean, I made a layup. It's not like I made something from half court," LeBron said of his game winner against the Pacers (via Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today) "I made a layup. I've been doing that since I was 8 years old."

And he's been coming through when it matters most for the last decade.

Follow @danfavale

*All stats in this article were compiled from Basketball-Reference and ESPN.com unless otherwise attributed.

Jose Canseco to Be Investigated for Rape

Never one to avoid controversy, former MLB slugger Jose Canseco is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons as he is reportedly being investigated for an alleged rape.

According to David K. Li of the New York Post, there were several tweets sent out from Canseco's Twitter account on Wednesday regarding his status as a suspect in a Las Vegas rape case. Many of those tweets were deleted, but it is unclear if Canseco actually tweeted them in the first place and if he was the one who ultimately took them down.

The Post was able to obtain screenshots of the deleted tweets with the alleged victim's name withheld. Canseco's rant started after Las Vegas police allegedly came to his home and informed him that he is a suspect in a rape case.

Rather than stopping there, Canseco continued and even tweeted the alleged victim's name and phone number, as well as a picture of her. He then posed a question to his followers regarding whether or not he actually raped the accuser.

Seemingly confident in his innocence, Canseco then offered to take a lie detector test. He also challenged the alleged victim to do the same, according to Li.

While Canseco's Twitter timeline is now flooded with tweets about his upcoming game with the Fort Worth Cats of United League Baseball, he made one thing clear:

According to Dan Landson of 8 News NOW in Las Vegas, police have officially named Canseco as a suspect in the case.

Landson is also reporting that Canseco has gained 2,500 Twitter followers since his tirade and subsequent naming as a suspect, so it's clear that plenty of people are interested to see what happens next in this bizarre saga.

Canseco has been retired from Major League Baseball since 2001, but he has managed to stay in the news since then. Due to this latest controversy, it doesn't seem Canseco is going away any time soon.

Follow @MikeChiari on Twitter

United have been linked with numerous midfielders across the past year and Moyes must not let this influence his decision. He will arrive with his own ideas and preferred style, so the left-back position should become his first area of focus.

While the aforementioned rumours may excite United fans, The Daily Mail's suggestion that Moyes is considering a bid for 17-year-old Southampton left-back Luke Shaw is perhaps the most interesting of all. As a first signing, the Englishman's arrival would not only fit straight into United's current plans, it would signal the beginning of an exciting future.

The Premier League champions have considered purchasing a new left-back for quite sometime. Leighton Baines' link to the club has been ongoing since 2011, but as documented here, is no longer the most viable option for a team that is currently shifting towards younger players.

Everton's 28-year-old defender is an excellent player, and would certainly be an asset to United's team, but he is not a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra. The £20 million man would be well into his 30s after one average length contract and doesn't represent great value for money unless he is going to play with the same ferocity until the end of his career.

Despite an improved performance during the 2012-13 season, Evra's positional discipline and concentration levels have diminished across the past few years. The full-back has relied on athletic ability to rescue him from trouble throughout his career, but now the 32-year-old's body has slowed, his weaknesses are amplified.

The Frenchman's attacking prowess is still a key weapon for United, especially when you consider he produced four goals and five assists during 32 Premier League appearances last season. He is an important figure at the club who will take on greater responsibility now Sir Alex Ferguson has moved upstairs.

Even so, it's time Evra receives real competition for his place in the starting lineup. Alexander Buttner's handful of displays have shown decent quality, but once again, mainly in attacking areas. Although the 24-year-old is a strong tackler and offers endless energy down the left, Buttner's defensive responsibilities are secondary to a player who wants to attack at every opportunity.

Realistically, the Dutchman is not the answer to United's left-back position after Evra's power is overcome. Although Fabio continues to mature as a player, he will also need time to regularly challenge. For Moyes, the long-term answer could rest with a teenager who currently resides in the South of England.

What would Luke Shaw offer Manchester United? The 17-year-old made 25 appearances in Southampton's 2012-13 Premier League season, helping the side to excellent results against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. He is a speedy, technically gifted dribbler who delivers a wicked cross and loves to get stuck into the opposition with dogged tackling.

As we have seen with his play at Southampton, Shaw is a bright spark whose ability to cover ground often opens up opportunities for his teammates in vital moments of play. He certainly has improving to do, namely holding onto possession and converting his attacks into goals and assists, but the 6'1" defender has everything in place to strengthen United's defence in years to come.

Moyes' appointment suggests the Old Trafford board is looking for an era after Ferguson. The new boss must prioritise the long-term and sustained success of the club over an immediate run of trophies. Although Baines is a complete player who would contribute straight-from-the-box, the Scotsman will make a bigger statement by landing the young talents of Luke Shaw.

As a first signing, this acquisition couldn't fulfill the Manchester United criteria any better.

Follow @Nakerman

All statistics in this article are courtesy of Who Scored.

WWE History: Where Does Miguel's Leg Drop Rank All Time?

WWE recently launched an initiative to team up with the NFL in recruiting talent, but singer Miguel may be worth a look after his blunder at the Billboard Awards.

The popular R&B artist attempted a split during a performance of his award-winning single "Adorn," only to land awkwardly on two unsuspecting fans. The accidental leg drop has become internet catnip, even warranting the Jim Ross treatment.

Miguel's leg drop, while unintentional, was an impressive visual. But WWE has had its share of impressive high-risk leg drops.

The all time great leg drops etch their way in history through originality, risk and the use of props. Hulk Hogan, while boasting the most famous leg drop of all time, doesn't qualify under this criteria. But it at least deserves mention. Sorry, Terry.

Begin Slideshow

NBA Draft 2013: Identifying Stars with Most Bust Potential

Every draft features a handful of players with star potential and very little risk of busting at the NBA level.

Well, almost every draft.

The 2013 class isn’t quite on par with some of the more recent crops of NBA prospects. Without a true elite player in this year’s draft, it’s extremely hard to predict how the picks may play out on June 27.

There will invariably be a few players who surprise everyone and go on to have a big impact at the professional level, but team and schematic fit (as well as coaching) play a big part in how those players develop.

For some of the college stars who will find a home early in the lottery, time will be a factor in their development. The window for top picks to perform is very small—and the pressure extremely high.

The following three players could fall under that category in their formative NBA seasons.

Cody Zeller, PF/C, Indiana

No top college prospect wants to stay at school and forgo millions of dollars in potential NBA earnings, but that’s exactly what Indiana’s Cody Zeller should have done.

The tweener big man will have a hard time finding an immediate fit at the next level, and that positional uncertainty doesn’t bode well for his prospects with a team likely to select him in the lottery.

Zeller had a terrific 2012-13 season with the Hoosiers, but he isn’t big or strong enough to play a similar position in the NBA. He may bulk up and develop into a center, but he’s nowhere near that level right now.

But if he can’t log a lot of minutes at the 5 in the NBA, where does he fit?

Zeller doesn’t have a refined jump shot or the quickness and athleticism to defend some of the league’s top power forwards. He may be able to outmuscle some of those players at the offensive end, but he’s going to struggle playing in any system that necessitates more of a stretch role from its power forwards at the offensive end.

The potential is certainly there, but teams with early lottery selections can’t afford to gamble on upside and a player unable to be a strong contributor early in his career. If Zeller is selected in the top 10 picks of the draft, expect him to be slapped with the “bust” tag by year three.

Shabazz Muhammad, SF, UCLA

Star UCLA forward Shabazz Muhammad didn’t quite live up to expectations in his freshman campaign, but the potential that made him one of the top recruits in his class will also make him a lottery pick in the 2013 draft.

The problem with potential is that it isn’t always an indicator of talent.

Muhammad has talent, but he lacks a lot of the more refined skills necessary to succeed at the NBA level, especially from a scoring forward in an NBA shooting guard’s body.

The UCLA product struggles to create his own shots and separate from defenders along the perimeter. That particular shortcoming will only be magnified playing against the more highly skilled defenders the NBA has to offer. Without the ability to put the ball on the floor and create his own scoring opportunities, Muhammad will settle in with a big group of one-dimensional NBA scorers.

Despite his length and rebounding ability, Muhammad also struggles far too much at the defensive end. Awareness is something he can improve with experience, but his other more glaring shortcomings may not be so easy to fix.

As is the case with Zeller, Muhammad has the potential to be a solid NBA player. It just may take too much time for him to realize that potential.

Nerlens Noel, C, Kentucky

Nerlens Noel has a higher ceiling than any player in this draft. Unfortunately, he’s also coming off a devastating knee injury that has the potential to derail his NBA career.

Noel’s superior athleticism made him a dominant defensive presence in his time on the floor with the Wildcats last season. It remains to be seen how quickly he can return to form after tearing his ACL, though.

In addition, the seven-footer will need some time to grow into his thin frame. Noel’s length is a big advantage in blocking shots, but he’ll struggle in defending some of the NBA’s stronger centers.

Were Noel to be drafted with the fourth or fifth pick, the “bust” label probably wouldn’t apply. But a lot of extra pressure is placed on No. 1 picks, and Noel just may not be ready to shoulder that burden.

Despite all those red flags, the Cleveland Cavaliers don't have many other options. Noel's athleticism and upside will likely force the Cavs to take him in hopes that Noel will avoid the pitfalls of being such a highly rated prospect.
