2012 World Junior Championship: Devante Smith-Pelly and Olli Maatta Injured
Canada has 6-1 lead over Finland in the opening game of the World Junior Championship, but both teams have suffered injuries to key players.
For Canada, Devante-Smith Pelly went down with a leg injury towards the end of the second period. He was battling in front of the net in his own zone when he came up limp with the injury.Smith-Pelly returned to the locker room and has not returned. He won't return to the game and will be reevaluated tomorrow.
Olli Maatta also went down after a vicious hit from Boone Jenner in the first period. The 17 year old defenseman had the puck in the corner before Jenner came flying into the corner and took his block off. Maatta is not going to return, and that's terrible news considering how much his draft stock has already plummeted this season.
Canada is in complete control of this hockey game. Mark Stone and Jonathan Huberdeau have carried the offense, and Dougie Hamilton even chipped in with a goal. Hamilton's strong play in juniors this season is carrying over to the tournament.
Finland was hoping for a better start, but there is a lot of hockey to be played in this tournament.
