Jarome Iginla has been the target of rumors for years now. It seems like every time the trade deadline approaches, the Iginla rumors once again start to take form.
While the Philadelphia Flyers do not have a glaring need for more offense, they have always been interested in Jarome Iginla's services. The Flyers have a huge void to fill on defense with the loss of Chris Pronger for the remainder of the season, including playoffs.
That won't stop Philadelphia from inquiring, however. One thing about the Flyers that people haven't seemed to grasp quite yet is their knack for unpredictability. Just when you think you've figured out what they're doing, they switch it up.
Eklund from HockeyBuzz.com is reporting that the Flyers could have interest in Jarome Iginla in the event that he becomes available. I can't say that I don't believe him, given the rash decisions they've made in the offseason. Ek goes on to name other teams that would have interest as well, but he makes a few valid points.
The Calgary Flames have been stuck in a rut for some time now, and it seems as though nothing is going to change unless they really go out on a limb and make something big happen. That isn't going to happen unless they move one of their better players, and who better than Jarome Iginla? He'd certainly fetch the Flames a handsome return, and that could be just what the Flames need.
The Flyers have the pieces that Calgary would likely command, but it remains to be seen where Philadelphia's priorities are at the moment. My guess is that they will likely grab a defenseman before looking further into Iginla's availability.
Calgary could benefit from a fresh start, and adding some young talent, which the Flyers have plenty of, could give them that final boost they need to get themselves out of the hole they've dug themselves in.
Would adding Jarome Iginla make up for the loss of Chris Pronger?
If I had to take a wild stab at it, I'd say the trade might look something like this:
To Philly: Jarome Iginla, third-round draft pick.
To Calgary: Sergei Bobrovsky, Brayden Schenn/Matt Read and a first-round draft pick.
Maybe it would take much more, or maybe much less. I'm not sure, but I'd expect any trade for Iginla to include a first-rounder or multiple first-rounders depending on who is being sent the other way.
If you ask me, I'd still rather have Shea Weber, given the fact that the Flyers have much more of a need for a defenseman at the moment, but adding a guy like Jarome Iginla might make up for the lack of Chris Pronger.
February 27 will be an exciting day for sure.
