The Most Historic US Soccer Sites: Preview

David Wilson by Senior Writer Written on January 01, 2009

Folks have played the beautiful game in the United States now for nearly 150 years, and over that span many different pitches throughout this great nation have been used by American and International soccer players alike to entertain die-hard fans. But which are the best and most historic?

Over the next ten days, I will be taking STO readers on a tour of America’s most hallowed soccer grounds. Some of these fields and stadiums have hosted other great athletic feats over the years, but for the purposes of these rankings, I only looked at their unique histories as soccer venues.

The criteria I used to select the sites is as follows: (1) they must be (or must have been) in the US and a central figure in increasing the popularity of American soccer; (2) they must have featured some of the US’s greatest  games; and (3) they must have showcased some of the US’s greatest players.

Please come back to STO over the next ten days to see which sites have been selected and how I have them ranked. I am sure I omitted some good ones, so please let me hear about it in the comments. So, sit back, relax and get ready to hear about the most historic sites in American soccer history.
