The Kansas City Chiefs began the overhaul of their offensive line by cutting John Welbourn, who started each of last season's games at right guard.
They also released two little-used backups, defensive end Khreem Smith and running back Gilbert Harris.
Welbourn, 31, was part of a line that had all kinds of trouble last season, and he is just one strike away from receiving a year-long suspension from the NFL. He was forced to sit out four games in 2005 and six in 2006 for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The Chiefs are completely unsettled at right guard and right tackle, and they might be looking for a new center, too. That doesn't bode well at all for running back Larry Johnson, who is coming off a season abbreviated by injury.
At this point, the Chiefs' offense doesn't look like it will improve in 2008, having ranked last in rushing (78 yards per game) and 31st overall in 2007.
