NHL Trade Rumors: Are the Philadelphia Flyers in Talks with the Hurricanes?

While there are many rumors swirling around the Philadelphia Flyers right now, nothing could be more clear than their need for another elite defenseman.

The Flyers were on a seven-game hot streak through the month of December without the services of Chris Pronger but got a harsh dose of reality when the Boston Bruins came to South Philadelphia and handed the Flyers what Kimmo Timonen described as "a good ol' fashioned ass-whooping."

While rumors continue to stay red hot in Philadelphia, they aren't the only team that have been the subject of constant rumors. Things in Carolina are coming to a boiling point, and I don't think it will take until the trade deadline for the 'Canes to pull the trigger on another major trade.

In trying to turn the ship around, they've already fired head coach Paul Maurice, who was on his second stint with Carolina. They also traded away one of their top defenseman in Tomas Kaberle, as it appeared he was just not working out with the Hurricanes.

Even with the new addition of Jaroslav Spacek from Montreal and a new head coach, things in Carolina have yet to improve, and you better believe it isn't going unnoticed. With all these changes, the Hurricanes have still been the subject of multiple rumors, especially regarding their star forward Eric Staal.

While I'm fairly certain any talks with the Hurricanes are most likely not about Eric Staal, I do believe the Flyers could be in talks with the 'Canes about a defenseman. The Flyers would have to trade away the farm to acquire a guy like Staal, and they don't really have a glaring need for him. That said, Carolina could be looking for more firepower, something the Flyers have an abundance of.

Would Tim Gleason be a welcomed addition as a 5/6 defenseman in Philly?

Most likely, Philadelphia would be looking at guys like former Flyer Joni Pitkanen or newly-acquired Jaroslav Spacek, but it has been rumored for some time now that the Flyers would be interested in acquiring Tim Gleason.

Gleason is no Pronger, and at best Gleason is a 5/6 defenseman. However, the Flyers have been looking to shore up their defense, even before Pronger fell to injury. I believe they've had their eye on him for a while now, and what is better is the fact that he wouldn't cost much to acquire. A prospect and a draft choice would probably get it done.

Gleason is a free agent and currently making $2.75 million, which would probably go down a bit if he were signed to another contract extension or hit free agency. The Flyers could certainly fit that under the cap and wouldn't have to adjust the roster much to do so.

The Hurricanes continue to be the subject of rumors, even with the holiday trade freeze currently in place. I'm not the only one who thinks this either. Eklund from HockeyBuzz.com is also reporting to look at the Hurricanes once the trade freeze is lifted.

We'll have to wait until after the holidays to see exactly what will happen, but even if the Flyers aren't involved, look to the 'Canes to make a series of moves sooner rather than later.
