Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas finally squared off after years of friction dating back to the amateurs on September 14, 2002 in what was billed as "Bad Blood."

"Bad Blood" has an added amusement as a handle, given Vargas began a considerable doping regiment (he tested positive for Stanozolol after the fight) that egregiously chiseled up his physique (given how routinely soft Vargas throughout his career) going into the match.

For six rounds, the fight was very close and entertaining. Vargas was able score punches with Oscar on the ropes. Oscar found success outboxing Vargas where and when he could. By the seventh round, Oscar had seized the advantage and never looked back. Increasingly, Oscar's accuracy and power injured Vargas and began to dictate the tempo of the fight.

In the 10th round, Oscar found the target and dropped Vargas.

Round 11 closed out the fight with one of Oscar De La Hoya's most masterful finishes. Vargas was badly hurt until Oscar uncorked a final flurry and the referee stepped in to stop the beating.

A year later, Oscar would have another tussle with a juiced-up fighter in Shane Mosley, but not fare so well. This tim,e Oscar would square off against "the clear" and "the cream," but Shane Mosley not surprisingly assumed these Balco distributed substances were "legal supplements."

Oscar would fade in the later rounds enough that Mosley was able to put the drugs in his system to good use and squeak out a victory.
