What happened to the Raiders against Detroit?

Some NFL games just make a person shake their head in disbelief at what they just saw and ask the question: What happened?

Today's Raiders game was a prime example. So, here are a few answers to that question.

What happened?

Darrius Heyward-Bey looked like a first-round draft choice by having eight receptions for 155 yards, and a touchdown.

What happened?

After the Lions scored late in the first half, the Raiders had an eight-play, 52-yard drive, that ended with a 46-yard Sebastian Janikowski field goal that put the Raiders up, 17-14.

What happened?

The Raiders played great defense in the third quarter. The Lions gained only 59 total yards during the quarter. The Raiders stopped the Lions on downs at the Oakland 39 during the quarter.

The Raiders couldn't stop Calvin Johnson.

Oakland continued the great defense into the fourth quarter. They held Detroit to just 11 yards on their first drive. On the Lions' second fourth-quarter drive, Tommy Kelly forced a Matthew Stafford fumble that was recovered by Aaron Curry and returned for a touchdown with 7:47 remaining. At that point, the Raiders led, 27-14.

What happened?

From that point, the Lions ran 17 plays, gained 169 yards and scored two touchdowns to win, 28-27.

What happened?

The Lions final drive covered 98 yards in seven plays—with no timeouts—in just 1:35. Calvin Johnson caught three passes for 75 yards and the wining touchdown. For the day, he had nine receptions for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

What happened?

On the critical 48-yard reception that Johnson had on the final drive, the Raiders looked totally clueless, almost like they were in shock.

What happened?

On a day that the Broncos, Jets and Titans all lost, the Raiders failed to gain any ground in the AFC playoff race.

What happened?

Possibly the most devastating loss of a season that started with such potential.
