Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns: The Greatest Round in Boxing History (w/video)
Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield's 10th round comes closest, but nothing can touch "The War" for putting on display perhaps the greatest round of boxing ever witnessed. Certainly it's the greatest round in middleweight history.
On April 15, 1985, Marvin Hagler and Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns faced off for what was initially called "The Fight," however would soon be hailed as "The War" for all time.
From the opening bell it's toe-to-toe with both Hagler and Hearns unloading every bit of heavy artillery each fighter could muster.
From the opening second, "Marvelous" Marvin swings for the fences with a massive right hook to get things started.
Within 15 seconds, it's as if the crowd and the announcers have gone completely hysterical while both men inside the ring calmly trade bombs. Both men are throwing with such ferocity that even glancing shots are doing damage while, at the same time, leaving themselves completely open to massive counters.
There's more action in the first round than most supposed "action" fighter's entire career highlight reels.
Of course, Hagler would go on to overwhelm Hearns in Round 3 despite being badly bloodied himself.
What a golden era in the middleweight division these two fighters fought in.
