Villa To Break The "Big Four" This Year?
More than half of the season gone, and Aston Villa continue to impress. Their 1-0 victory over Hull City last night confirms they'll go in to the New Year placed fourth in the Premiership.
During the 16 Premiership seasons, except for Manchester United all of Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal have dropped out of the top four from time to time. Last time this happened was in the 2004-05 season, when Everton finished in fourth spot ahead of bitter rivals Liverpool.
Aston Villa have themselves finished in the top four on two occasions, and they certainly have the quality and spirit this time around. Using Martin O'Neill's experience, they've already made it to the UEFA Cup Last 32, and chances are bright they'll be playing in the Champions League next season.
Premiership Top Four finish count (1992-92 — 2007-08)
Manchester United 16
Arsenal 14
Liverpool 10
Chelsea 8
