David Villa looks set to remain at Barcelona this January after breaking his left leg in Barcelona's World Club Cup match against Qatar's Al Sadd.

On first viewing, the fracture looked quite severe with the star striker's tibia visible. Early reports, including the New York Times, suggest the Spain forward could be out for around six months.

Over the last few weeks rumours have persisted that David Villa could soon be on his way out of Barcelona's Camp Nou, heading north to the English shores of the Premiership.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa (metro.co.uk) had all been linked with Spain's all-time top scorer and European and World Cup winner, but an injury of this magnitude will surely rule out a January move from any of his potential suitors.

Considering Fernando Torres' struggles in England after coming back from a long-term injury, it would be perhaps smart to wait to see if Villa can return in time for the summer transfer window.
