A "Royal" Disappointment
Let me paint a picture for you. It's Christmas Day 2008. I'm sitting with my family enjoying my kids opening their gifts, still cringing from the fact that I spent $60 on an Elmo Live doll.
After the kids open their presents it's the adults turn. My wife finds her stocking stuffed with gift cards among other things.
Then my wife hands me a huge box. Pretty light for a box so big so I'm wondering what the heck is in it. I open it to find another, smaller box. Then finally after I open the smaller box I see an envelope with two tickets in it.
Two Tickets to the 2009 Royal Rumble!
No Shane, this is not a dream, it really happened though I even had to pinch myself because I couldn't believe it.
For those that don't know, I've mentioned in previous articles and in comments that I was trying to go to the Royal Rumble. I thought there was "No Chance In Hell" that I would be able to go to the Rumble as my mother-in-law is turning the "Big 50" the same weekend.
Well let's just say things worked out and now I'm going to the Rumble!
As I hugged and kissed my tickets all weekend (kidding) I couldn't help but get excited about this week's RAW and the fatal four way match.
Fast forward to Monday night and I am anxious for RAW to start. I mention to my wife that tonight I find out who I will get to see face John Cena for the Heavyweight Championship at Royal Rumble.
Her response was "whoop-dee-doo" (she hates wrestling by the way).
During the show I find out that Melina will face Beth Phoenix for the Women's Title at the Rumble. Would have preferred to see Mickie James but I guess Melina is ok.
Later in the show the 10-man tag match comes on and I find that to be a very entertaining match. I also enjoyed "The Legacy" initiation matches as well.
We finally get to the main event of the evening. The fatal four way!
In a previous article I had predicted that Chris Jericho would win the match and face Cena at the Rumble. I still believed this to be true but was looking forward to what swerve the WWE could throw at me.
They threw the swerve alright and damn do I wish I could throw it right back at them.
Much to my dismay JBL wins the match!
I understand not allowing Randy Orton to win the match as he now seems to be the logical choice to face John Cena at Wrestlemania XXV.
Chris Jericho made the most sense to me as he has already fought Cena twice at Survivor Series and Armageddon and you don't need to build the feud up.
What beef does JBL have with John Cena other than the fact that Cena is the champ and JBL wants to be?
It makes no sense to me and now on January 25, 2009 I will have to witness this match live.
I can also only imagine that the boos will be ringing at a fever pitch during the World Heavyweight Championship match.
My only consolation in the Cena/JBL match is that JBL has no chance of winning.
Maybe Shawn Michaels comes to the ring to assist JBL but as he goes for "Sweet Chin Music" on Cena, he accidentally kicks JBL and cost him the title.
Maybe that will add some spice to the JBL/Michaels storyline because so far it stinks.
Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled to be attending my first Royal Rumble. I'm looking forward to witnessing the Royal Rumble match live. I can only imagine what the atmosphere will be like at Joe Louis Arena that night.
The WWE could have just spared me the JBL sighting.
