I reported here the other day that I thought the Nashville Predators could be good trade partners with the Philadelphia Flyers, if Philly was interested in acquiring a defenseman. You can read my article here. I spoke mostly of Shea Weber, which I personally think would be a perfect fit in Philly, but most people seem to think its nearly impossible. However, it looks as though I may have been correct.
Eklund from HockeyBuzz.com is reporting that the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators are indeed in talks, even if they are just preliminary.
"The Flyers may also be talking to Nashville about a D-man, but I am not sure if these talks are about pulling the trigger now, or more regarding the deadline..." Eklund wrote in his latest blog entry. To read more of his blog, click here.
Now, you always have to take Eklund's rumors with a grain of salt, but at the end of the day, he's got great sources and it matches up with everything I've been saying in recent weeks. It really doesn't come as much of a surprise to me, as Nashville and Philadelphia have been known to swap players frequently in the past.
There's one thing I definitely agree with Eklund on. I don't believe a trade will go down right away. I believe this is one of those cases where Nashville and Philly will go back and forth with offers for quite some time, most likely leading up to the NHL trade deadline. I could be wrong, but if these talks are indeed about Shea Weber, which is still unconfirmed, I don't think it's going to be something anyone pulls the trigger on right away.
Another defenseman the Flyers could be targeting is Ryan Suter, which may be much more doable for Philly. He makes about half of what Shea Weber makes, which would make it much easier for the Flyers to fit under, with their already tight cap space. The question is, are the Flyers interested in Suter's services? Most likely, but it remains to be seen exactly what Philly is interested in. Do they need a clear-cut stud defenseman, or one who can just fill a void until Pronger returns?
For right now, this is all speculation, but things seem to be heating up as the Christmas deadline approaches. Will the Flyers pull the trigger early this season? Or will they once again hold out for a while and let their rookies take the extra ice time? We'll find out soon enough.
