January Transfer Window: 15 Silliest January Rumors

1 of 16

The January transfer window is a period when there are a number of teams looking to strengthen their respective squads in order to ensure a strong second half of the season. It is likely that all the teams will be looking at prospective players to sign when the window opens.

There is expected to be some transfer activity in the window just like the previous year in which Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll were signed for very high transfer fees.

There are already plenty of reports in the media as to which clubs are targeting or scouting which players and there are a number of rumors even though there is still another 15 days for the window to open. Though some of the information may be valid, there are others which could be considered as silly. Here are 15 silly rumors concerning the January transfer window.

Arsenal Linked with Real Madrid's Karim Benzema

2 of 16

Karim Benzema is one of the best strikers in the world, and importantly, he has established himself as a major player in Jose Mourinho's plans. Though he initially struggled for form since his move from France, he has been prolific for Madrid in the recent past and has the trust of his manager.

According to the Daily Mail, Benzema is one of Arsene Wenger's top targets as the French tactician looks to add depth to his squad.

However, it is very unlikely that Madrid will entertain any sort of discussion regarding the France international, who is on a long term contract at Madrid. Wenger should probably look for other options and might look to add another striker in the January transfer window.

Tottenham to Make Ambitious Move for Real Madrid's Ricardo Kaka

3 of 16

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are apparently preparing an ambitious loan move to sign Real Madrid's Kaka, who has fallen out of favor at the Bernabeu. However, Kaka is slowly recapturing his best form and Jose Mourinho will be keen to retain the services of the Brazilian international at least till the end of the season.

Also, Kaka will attract the best clubs in the world, and joining Tottenham would be a step down for the Brazilian.

Also, Tottenham themselves have an excellent midfield consisting of the likes of Scott Parker, Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart and are unlikely to spend big to acquire a midfielder. If Real Madrid do want to offload the Brazilian, they are likely to do so in the summer and will probably not be open to a loan move this season.

Real Madrid to Make Move for Wayne Rooney

4 of 16

According to this report, Real Madrid are apparently interested in a move for Wayne Rooney, especially if Manchester United do firm up their interest in Madrid's Germany midfielder Sami Khedira. Manchester United have apparently shown interest in both Lassana Diarra and Khedira.

Madrid president Florentino Perez could move for Rooney, for whom Madrid are willing to pay as much as £60 million.

Real Madrid plan to raise the cash to sign Rooney by selling their Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain, who has been targetd by Chelsea for a fee of around £40 million. However, it is probable that Manchester United are not interested in negotiating for Rooney, and it could turn out to be a silly rumor.

Blackburn Interested in AC Milan Striker Filippo Inzaghi

5 of 16

According to the Daily Mail, relegation battlers Blackburn Rovers are interested in a move for AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi, who could move away from Milan. Though it is a realistic possibility that he could move from Milan, it is improbable that he will be interested in a move to Blackburn, who are fighting against relegation. Their style of play is also unlikely to suit the striker.

Though Blackburn would benefit from Inzaghi joining the club, it is very unlikely that he will considering that Blackburn are in a bad position in the table. It will be very difficult for him to adjust to their style of play.

Manchester United Interested in Barcelona Midfielder Javier Mascherano

6 of 16

According to this report on Caughtoffside.com, Manchester United are planning a surprise swoop on Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano, who will not be a first choice player if everyone in the team is fit. However, with Barcelona having injury problems in their side, Mascherano who is versatile has played a number of times for the Spanish and European champions.

Also, Mascherano who played for Liverpool, is not well respected by the fans of Manchester United and they may not be happy with the move for the defensive. Barcelona are unlikely to sell the midfielder. Also, Manchester United might look for other cheaper alternatives, which is why there is little chance of this deal happening.

Chelsea Interested in Arsenal's Defensive Midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong

7 of 16

According to this report, Chelsea are interested in a permanent move for Arsenal's teenage midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, who performed well in the Carling Cup game against Manchester City. Frimpong missed a large part of the previous season due to injury but has had chances to prove himself this season.

The England born Ghanian is regarded as one for the future and has developed into a sort of a cult figure due to his interaction with the fans.

It is highly unlikely that Frimpong will be interested in any move away from the Emirates. It is more likely that he will go out on loan in January in order to gain more playing time. Also, Chelsea do have some good defensive midfield options in Oriol Romeu and Mikel.

Michael Essien is also set to return for the second half of the season.

This is a rumor which is not going to happen which is why it finds its place in this article.

Chelsea and FC Barcelona to Swap Strikers, David Villa and Fernando Torres

8 of 16

According to this report on the Daily Mail, Chelsea are apparently considering a swap deal involving Fernando Torres in order to sign Barcelona striker David Villa. Villa has been usurped by Alexis Sanchez in the pecking order and due to Pep Guardiola varied tactical formations, he has not had much playing time.

Also, there have been reports of him having a rift with Lionel Messi and could be on his way out of the Nou Camp.

Though it is possible that Chelsea can sign Villa, it is improbable that Barcelona will accept Fernando Torres as part of the deal. Torres is also not versatile and could not fit into Guardiola's systems. Also, he is at his lowest confidence in his career and Barcelona are not likely to be interested in signing him.

QPR Interested in a Loan Move for Manchester City's Nigel De Jong

9 of 16

According to ESPNSoccernet, Queens Park Rangers are interested in a loan move for Nigel De Jong in order to ensure that they do have a good finish to their season. Queens Park Rangers do have a strong owner and could possibly afford the wages, but would De Jong be interested in a move to a bottom table club is the question.

De Jong was a regular for most of the previous season but has not been a starter this season.

However, with Yaya Toure leaving for the African Nations Cup in January, it is very likely that De Jong will get more playing time at Manchester City. Manager Roberto Mancini will be keen to hold on to the players who could give them the edge in this title race and the Dutch midfielder is certainly one who can provide solidiity to the team.

Tottenham Interested in Ambitious Move for Manchester City's Carlos Tevez

10 of 16

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in an ambitious big money move for Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez, who has failed to return to Manchester City's training ground.

According to the report, Tottenham have made official enquiries regarding the availability of the striker as they strive to challenge for the league title. Tottenham hope to beat other European giants like PSG, who are also interested in him.

However, Tottenham do have a lot of obstacles in this possible move because Manchester City will not prefer selling to a direct rival. Also, Spurs' wage structure means that they might not be able to afford the rocket-high wages earned by the Argentine striker at Manchester CIty. Also, it will be difficult to convince the player to stay in England again.

Arsenal to Consider Move to Re-Sign Manchester City's Kolo Toure

11 of 16

According to this report, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is apparently considering a move to re-sign former Arsenal defender Kolo Toure, who has received less playing time for Manchester City.

Toure enjoyed a long and successful spell at Arsenal, but it is highly unlikely that Wenger will be interested in a move for the Ivory Coast international, considering that he has five centre backs already in his team.

The addiiton of Per Mertesacker has meant that they do have solidity in this department and Wenger is not one to sign former players again, though he has made exceptions in signing Sol Campbell and Jens Lehmann. Also, Roberto Mancini will be keen to retain Toure's experience as they look to challenge for the title and Toure could have a role to play in case of injuries.

Russian Club Anzhi Interested in Move for Chelsea's Didier Drogba

12 of 16

Russian club Anzhi are one of the richest clubs in the world and are looking to attract some of the best players in the world. They did manage to sign Samuel Eto'o from Inter Milan and according to Talksport, they are interested in a move for Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

Drogba has apparently failed to agree a new contract extension with Chelsea and could be on his way out looking for a last big pay-day.

However, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is very unlikely to let him leave in January in particular considering that he is their main striker with Torres in extremely poor form. Drogba continues to play at the highest level and still remains a threat. It is likely that any decision regarding the future of the Ivorian will be decided only at the end of the season.

Arsenal's Theo Walcott to Juventus in a Swap Deal Involving Milos Krasic

13 of 16

Theo Walcott has had to endure plenty of criticism in the past, but no one can deny that he has made considerable progress in the last two seasons. He has established himself as a starter for the Gunners and is one of the most important players for the Gunners.

Arsenal did face plenty of criticism at the start of the season, but have managed to string a set of good results and are in contention for the qualifying in the Champions League places.

Milos Krasic who has attracted the interest of many clubs in the world has not found a starting place in Antonio Conte's plans and could leave in the January transfer window. However, Arsenal would be reluctant to lose Walcott because of his importance and may not be interested in a move for Krasic.

Real Madrid's Esteban Granero Involved in Swap Deal with Chelsea' Frank Lampard

14 of 16

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho shared an excellent relationship with Frank Lampard at his time at Stamford Bridge and could look to make a move for the ageing midfielder. Mourinho is a manager who values the experience of his players. Lampard could add some vital experience to his young side as they look to defeat Barcelona in the title race.

However, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas will be very reluctant to lose the midfielder because he can still add something to the team as he showed in the victory against Manchester City. Also, Lampard is a consummate professional and still has a lot to give to the Blues.

Though Esteban Granero is a decent player, Chelsea do have depth in midfield if they do not sell Lampard and Raul Meireles has also adjusted well to the system employed by Villas-Boas.

Aston Villa Linked with Spanish Striker David Villa

15 of 16

David Villa has been benched in many games this season following the arrivals of Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez. However, he still remains one of the most feared strikers in the world and the Spanish striker is still lethal in front of goal.  If Villa is available, then it is very likely that he will not be short of suitors because many big clubs would do well with a striker of Villa's calibre.

However, it is very surprising that Aston Villa have been linked with a move for David Villa considering that the problem for Aston Villa has been that they have not been able to create enough goal-scoring opportunities for Darren Bent and the other strikers. Also, Villa is likely to be above Aston Villa's price range. This is a rather strange rumor.

Chelsea Linked with Move for AC Milan Striker Robinho

16 of 16

According to the Mirror, Chelsea have been linked with a move for former Manchester City striker Robinho who could be on his way out of Milan, if the Italian side clinch the signing of Carlos Tevez. The future of Tevez is undecided, but it is unlikely that Robinho is the one who will be on his way considering that he has had some good performances for the club since joining them.

Also, Robinho had a troubled spell at Manchester City where he was unable to adjust to the Premier League and its physicality and did not perform to his potential. He is unlikely to be attracted back to the Premiership. Also, it would be a huge gamble for Chelsea, especially after their last big signing Fernando Torres, failed to perform to his potential.
