I recently visited the Seminole Hardrock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida and happened to see NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley.
I made my way over to the Inside the NBA analyst and quickly engaged him in conversation while we sat at the Blackjack table.
After losing a few thousand dollars, Sir Charles and I agreed to move our conversation to the bar. As we got up to leave security quickly reminded Charles to pay his losses before disappearing.
We took our seats at the bar, ordered a few drinks, and continued our talk. We hit various topics including his playing days, the current state of the NBA, politics, and the current events in the sporting world. Of course, we also hit the Gene Chizik hiring.
"It's pure racism," he said.
I told him that I don't follow college football but I heard about the situation. I told him that part of me wants to believe it wasn't racism, but that I could see where he was coming from.
"You want to know what else I find racist?" he asked.
When I sat there quietly he continued, "The fact that MVP has not won a damn wrestling match since Aug. 29."
He slammed his fist on the counter, causing several patrons to stare. I had no knowledge of Barkley's interest in wrestling and I was utterly shocked. Even more so, the fact that he knew details of wrestlers' win/loss records was astounding.
"I really don't think it is racially charged though," I answered.
"Why is it that the black guy has to be the one to lose? Why is it the white guy is always on top of him? It's just another example of the white man keeping the black man down."
"You can't look at it that way," I said. "It's all fake, remember?"
"Which is even worse," he went on. "That means they are scripting it that the black man is inferior to whitey."
"But Charles, it's entertainment," I retorted.
I mentioned that it is quite funny when MVP loses his matches. It turns out that was the wrong thing to say.
"Oh!" he exclaimed. "You think it's funny that the black man can't ever seem to come out on top against his white competitors?"
I tried to get a word in but he kept on going. "You mean to tell me it has nothing to do with the guy being named Montell Vontavious Porter? I don't see anybody named Charlie Smith losing over and over."
"Charles, it's not because of his name."
"The man is the highest paid superstar in Smackdown! history. He deserves better," Barkley said.
"True, but don't you remember Barry Horowitz? He was always losing back in the 90s."
"Horowitz? Sounds Jewish. So the WWE isn't just racist, they're prejudiced too!" He looked angrier.
"Look, how about we agree to disagree?" I suggested.
He agreed to that and we ordered another round.
"So," he said after about two minutes of silence. "You up for another shot at the tables?"
