Packing for Vegas: College Basketball Picks Dec. 29

Andrew KahnCorrespondent IDecember 29, 2008

I love the holiday season—time off from work, good food, Bowl games—but it does mean less college basketball, so it's been a week since my last article. I'm back with what I hope is another winner tonight, though.

I'm taking Davidson (-4.5) in its Southern Conference opener at Charleston. The Cougars are much improved from last year, and while they are 10-1, they lack a real quality win. They beat Winthrop by one, a team Davidson beat by 27.

After last season's success, Davidson has a target on its back in the Southern Conference. This will be a big game for Charleston, but with most students on break, will the arena be as loud as it usually would be for such a game? Also, the Cougars have North Carolina next on their schedule, so they could be looking ahead.

Stephen Curry has been struggling from the field a bit lately, but stats show that he shoots much better when not playing a BCS conference school. I think we'll see the 30+ point Curry tonight, and Davidson should win by double digits.

Today's pick: Davidson -4.5; 1 unit

Season Record: 23-14 (62 percent); +14.6 units
