Frank Mir has now won seven out of his last nine fights. At the age of 32, it can be argued that Mir is in the prime of his career and could make one more serious run at the belt.

There are five intriguing fights that Mir may be presented with, and while it won't be an immediate title shot, he is certainly two fights away from one.

Shane Carwin is projected to be out of the octagon until the middle of 2012 due to back surgery, but his first fight back could be against Frank Mir. Mir's last loss was against Carwin at UFC 111 in which he was knocked out in the first round.

Alistair Overeem

Alistair Overeem is scheduled to fight Brock Lesnar on December 30th. The winner of that fight will take on Junior dos Santos for the title. There are current rumors circulating that Overeem is having issues with a pre-fight drug test and will not be fighting at the end of this month. However, those are just rumors for the time being.

If Overeem does fight Lesnar and he loses, he would then most likely take on Frank Mir.

Brock Lesnar

Should Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar cross paths within the next 12 months, fans of MMA would be given the opportunity to see the completion of a trilogy while both fighters are still near the top of their competition level.

As mentioned, Lesnar is scheduled to fight Alistair Overeem at the end of this month. Should he win, he will move on to a title shot against Junior dos Santos. However, if he loses, his next fight could very well be another fight with Frank Mir.

Cain Velasquez

Cain Velasquez is fresh off a very quick knockout loss to Junior dos Santos. While his championship belt has fallen from him, it hasn't fallen very far. Velasquez is still near the top of the heavyweight ladder and only has one loss on his record.

Dana White sees that Frank Mir is streaking, and Velasquez's name has never been as popular as it is today. The timing of matching these two up now just feels right.

Junior Dos Santos

Granted, it is a pretty obvious assumption that Frank Mir would take on Junior dos Santos for this next fight should he be given the opportunity. There would have to be quite a snowball effect of injuries and drug suspensions for this to happen, which isn't likely.

However, should Mir win his next fight, the championship belt is going to be within his grasp one more time. Mir was rocked by "Big Nog," and it seemed like he was out of it until the spectacular submission. If Mir does meet dos Santos, he's going to have to sustain the power of Junior's punches while trying to get inside for a take down.

Frank Mir is one win away from a title shot.
