After the Knicks waived their starting point guard, Chauncey Billups, management decided to pick up another aging point guard, Mike Bibby, according to ESPN. It doesn't require any amount of thought to understand that this is a bad move for New York, a very bad one at that.

Yes, it was an understood need that New York needed to either upgrade or get younger at the lead guard spot, but this certainly isn't the answer. Billups was a very serviceable piece to the Knicks roster during the second half of the season, averaging 17.5 points per and 5.5 assists. But, the problem lied in his durability, as he came down with an injury during New York's lone playoff series against Boston. An inexperienced Toney Douglas stepped into the rotation and made a valiant effort, but simply wasn't enough.

It's also understood that the Knicks made this move to clear cap space to acquire center Tyson Chandler, a move that immediately bolsters New York's frontcourt and playoff outlook. There's no doubt that this is a huge step in the right direction and an immediate upgrade over Ronny Turiaf, but the point guard spot is too essential to pass up on. J.J. Barea and T.J. Ford are two point guards that the Knicks could have gotten at a wholesale price.

Now I anticipate that the Mike D'Antoni will take on the point guard spot from a committee standpoint where Bibby and Toney Douglas will get significant minutes in the rotation.
