Mark Bocek put on a very entertaining fight tonight at UFC 140 while battling for all three rounds with his opponent Nik Lentz.
Since coming to the UFC, Bocek has had trouble putting together more than three wins in a row. His first fight was, to give him the benefit of the doubt, against Frankie Edgar, which Bocek lost.
Bocek's last fight was against Benson Henderson. The fight went all three rounds to Bocek’s credit, but he ended up losing the fight to a decision.
Bocek seems to have trouble when he moves to the upper echelon of lightweight competition.
His only losses inside the UFC are to the two fighters I’ve already mentioned, Mac Danzig and Jim Miller, all of whom are some pretty great lightweights.
Bocek looked great tonight, but unfortunately he didn’t look like he would yet be able to hold his own against some top tier competition.
That being said, perhaps a match up between Bocek and Jim Miller might not be a bad idea.
Miller is coming off a loss to Henderson, and it would give Bocek an opportunity to not only prove himself against a higher caliber opponent, but to avenge one of his losses.
But it’s probably still a little too soon for that matchup.
No matter what fight Bocek gets next, he needs to win in in convincing fashion. If he does, perhaps he’ll be able to shoot himself up the lightweight latter.
