According to Auburn Rivals, Gene Chizik will handle the defense for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl on December 31, 2011 against the Virginia Cavaliers.

This decision could be very telling as to where Auburn’s next defensive coordinator will come.

The other positive factor about this decision is that Gene Chizik can get the young Auburn defense operating his Tampa Two defensive scheme in the way he intended.

The bowl practice period is long enough to get this accomplished. This should also help with the transition to a new defensive coordinator for spring training.

This announcement would seem to indicate that Auburn has a particular coach in mind to take Ted Roof's place. It would also indicate that this coach is currently the part of a staff participating in the bowl season.

It appears that Auburn fans will have to wait a while before the official announcement of who the new defensive coordinator will be.

Gene Chizik served as the defensive coordinator at Auburn for an undefeated season in 2004 and at Texas when they won a BCS championship in 2005.
