UPDATE- The trade is back on for Chris Paul going to LA, but this time he is headed to the Clippers. On Wednesday night the two teams announced a deal that would send Paul to LA. Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, and an unprotected first round pick that the Clippers got from Minnesota will go to the Hornets.
The combination of Paul and Blake Griffin has the potential to be outstanding for the Clippers, but the Hornets did well in this trade also. They get three quality players along with a draft pick that should be very high, based on the struggles Minnesota has had this season.
Stay tuned for more updates, and do not be surprised if this trade gets blocked after a few hours. I do not think it will, but you never know.
UPDATE- The trade is off for now at least. Owners complained to commissioner David Stern that they did not want the trade to go through, due to the fact that the new collective bargaining agreement was supposed to help make an effort for small market teams to be able to keep their superstars.
The Hornets, who are owned by the NBA, were told to kill the deal by Stern. Stern obviously felt that this trade could not go through with the fact that it would totally contradict the idea of small market teams having a chance to keep their superstars.
Hornets management has basically been handcuffed by Chris Paul, who has said that he would not sign an extension. Paul has expressed wishes to be traded to the New York Knicks, to form a super team with Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. It is unclear whether or not the league would allow this trade to go through at this time.
Should the NBA have killed the Chris Paul deal?
For now though, the Hornets will try to find a trade that the league finds acceptable; as they try to get some consolation for Chris Paul, knowing he will not re-sign with them this off-season.
Initial Report- Well, the city of Los Angeles is taking every superstar player in the world I guess. After news broke that Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson signed with the Angels this morning, news has just broken that the Los Angeles Lakers have just traded for Chris Paul.
Sources say that the Lakers have dealt Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom and will receive Paul in return. The Houston Rockets are trying to get involved in the deal as well and are hoping to receive Gasol from the trade. The Rockets are looking to send Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic to the Hornets in return for Gasol.
This move by the Lakers is the first in what the Lakers are hoping is a series of moves to create an "Orange County Super Team" to compete with the "South Beach Super Team" of the Miami Heat. The Lakers are expected to try to add Orlando Magic Dwight Howard as well, before the season begins on Christmas Day.
As for now though, Paul is headed to the Los Angeles Lakers. Stay tuned for more details to develop, and for any news to break on Howard possibly following Paul to Los Angeles.
It has to be a great day for the fans of Los Angeles sports teams.
