Will Alexei Kovalev Be Back With the Montreal Canadiens?

Daniel ArouchianSenior Analyst IDecember 27, 2008

At the end of the current season Alexei Kovalev will become a free agent. Does he deserve a new contract?

It's no secret that Kovalev could play better than the way he's been playing so far, but surprisingly enough he's the top scorer for the Montreal Canadiens. He was 27 points. That's one point better then Tanguay. One point is still one point.

He was acquired from the NY Rangers back on March 2nd, 2004 in return for Jozef Balej and a second round draft pick in 2004. It's safe to say the Habs had the better end of that trade.

At the end of the 2007-2008 season he had 35 goals, 49 assists for a total of 84 points in 82 games. For this season, after 33 games he has 8 goals, 18 assists for a total of 26 points.

I know what you're thinking: he's a long way from the 84 points he got last season, but I predict he'll get close to what he got last season.

So what's your opinion? Will Montreal sign Kovalev for a contract extension? Will he get traded? Or will he want to test the market after July 1st? I personally believe that Bob Gainey will sign Kovalev.
