January Transfer Rumours: 10 Biggest Names on the Market & Where They Could Land
The January transfer window is one of the most important periods for teams around the world as they look to strengthen their teams in order to have a strong finish to the season. It is the time when the teams analyze their strengths and weaknesses and look for players who could help them achieve their ambition. There was plenty of activity in the last summer, especially toward the end of the transfer window, with teams making frantic purchases.
For example, the big money signings of Fernando Torres and David Luiz by Chelsea and Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez by Liverpool all occurred in the last few days of the transfer window. There will be plenty of big name players who will be linked to various moves to other clubs due to various reasons and some of them could happen by the end of January. This article is on 10 big name players who could move in January along with their possible destinations as well.
1. Carlos Tevez (Manchester City)
Carlos Tevez is one of the best strikers in the world and the former Manchester City captain was one of the main factors for City qualifying in the Champions league. However, the Argentina international is also one of the most controversial figures in football and has not always got along well with Roberto Mancini, the manager of City. After the game against Bayern Munich, Mancini had problems with Tevez and since then, he has not played for City.
The striker has also not returned to City after he went to Argentina and most probably, he is likely to move somewhere else in the January transfer window. City could also be forced only to loan him if they cannot find any suitable buyer for the striker and AC Milan could be interested in the striker. Milan did lose Antonio Cassano due to illness and Tevez could be a great addition as they try to defend their title.
Probable Destinations: AC Milan
2. Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea)
Nicolas Anelka has been one of the best strikers in the last decade and after a very impressive start to his career at Arsenal, he has had a number of transfer moves in his career. The French striker is immensely talented but many do feel that he could have been even better if not for some of his failed moves. Anelka enjoyed a revival at Chelsea where he successfully formed a partnership with Didier Drogba.
Though he was an important player for Chelsea as they won the double under Carlo Ancelotti, he has been a peripheral figure for the Blues this season. Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has announced that his transfer request has been accepted and will leave the club in all probability in the January transfer window. He has been tracked by some clubs and according to the Mirror, he knows where he is moving in January.
Probable Destination: According to the Mirror, Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua are leading the chase for the striker.
3. Wesley Sneijder (Inter Milan)
Wesley Sneijder was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer but the move to Manchester United did not materialize and he did continue to stay at Inter Milan. However, Inter Milan have struggled this season and Sneijder could look for a move away from Italy. The influential Dutch midfielder has not been at his best this season but he is one of the world's best central midfielders. He would certainly improve the quality of Manchester United's midfield if he is signed by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United do have a strong team but they do need a creative central midfielder especially due to the fitness problems endured by Tom Cleverley, who has impressed when given the chance. Though Cleverley and Ravel Morrison are good prospects, Sneijder provides them an experienced option and could make the difference as they look to push Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Probable Destinations: Manchester United are likely to be linked to the Dutchman in January but they could face competition from Chelsea, especially if Tottenham resist any approach for Tottenham's Luka Modric.
4. Edinson Cavani (Napoli)
Napoli have been one of the teams to watch in the last couple of seasons as they have made superb progress and have a number of talented players in their team. In Edinson Cavani, they have one of the most feared strikers in the world and the Uruguay international has been prolific for the Serie A side. Also, he was the key in defeating Manchester City in the Champions League which gives them a good chance of qualifying for the next stages of the Champions League.
Paris St.Germain have splashed the money in the summer to acquire some quality players like Javier Pastore and Kevin Gameiro. However, they have endured a loss in form and could spend big again in January in order to win the title. Cavani has emerged as a major target for the French side as they ponder a bid of about €75 million according to Goal.com.
Probable Destinations: Napoli will be reluctant to sell Cavani but a bid of €75 million could be huge and could result in Cavani moving to PSG though it seems unlikely as of now.
5. Alexandre Pato (AC Milan)
Alexandre Pato is a very talented centre forward and has regularly scored goals for AC Milan. However, his problem has been with injuries and inconsistency due to strikers being ahead of him like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho. Also as written in slide one, AC Milan are the favorites to land Manchester City's Carlos Tevez which would further reduce Pato's chances of regular first team football at the San Siro.
According to the Daily Mail, he has been linked with a swap deal which would bring Tevez to Milan though it is not yet certain if both clubs will agree to that. Also, Pato would have to struggle here as well for first team football considering that City have Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero, who have all been in excellent form this season.
Probable Destinations: Manchester City have been linked with the Brazilian but other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with the striker.
6. Milos Krasic (Juventus)
Milos Krasic was one of the most sought after players when Juventus signed the winger from CSKA Moscow and did have some good performances for the Turin side. However, he has been a peripheral figure for Juventus under Antonio Conte as manager and could look for a move away from the club. Juventus are apparently interested in a move for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott and could offer Krasic to the Gunners in part-exchange.
However, it depends on whether Arsenal are prepared to sell Walcott in January and also, if the England international is prepared to move to Italy especially when he is a key member of the Arsenal side. Also, Krasic is a player who has attracted attention from other clubs in England as well with Manchester United and Chelsea also linked with the player.
Probable Destinations: There is a good chance that he could move to the Premier League with many clubs interested though it is not certain as to which club he will join.
7. Lukas Podolski (FC Cologne)
FC Cologne forward Lukas Podolski is a player of immense potential and at this stage in his career, he could look to play at the highest level in the Champions League. He is a regular in the Germany squad and did play his part in Germany's excellent campaign in the World Cup under Joachim Loew. Cologne has had various off-field problems this season and they are not likely to qualify for Europe this season, which is why Podolski could move from the club.
Arsenal are a club which has been linked with the forward especially because he would add immense quality to the strike force especially with both Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh leaving for the African Nations Cup. Also, Robin van Persie is one of the more injury-prone players in the Premiership and Podolski could be an excellent replacement to the influential Dutchman if the need arises.
Probable Destinations: Arsenal looks to be a possible destination if he leaves the club but he is likely to get more offers if he is on the market with Spurs and Lazio also linked with the Germany international.
8. Javi Martinez (Athletic Bilboa)
Spain midfielder Javi Martinez is one of the most talented midfielders in the La Liga and it is not surprising that he has attracted the attention of plenty of clubs. The Athletic Bilboa midfielder is strong physically and can cope with the demands of the Premiership. He is good defensively and along with his excellent distribution skills, he can also contribute effectively to the offensive side of the game.
Manchester City have been linked with the midfielder along with many other top clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool according to the Daily Mail. Also, he will not be available at a bargain with a fee of £34 million, which is the buyout clause inserted into his latest contract.
Probable Destinations: It is not certain if the midfielder will leave his club but if he does decide to, then he will not be short of suitors especially in England though the price could be a problem.
9. Luka Modric (Tottenham)
Chelsea were interested in signing Tottenham's Luka Modric in the summer but Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy stood firm in not selling the Croatia international. Modric is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and is very important for Spurs as they look to secure Champions League qualification at the minimum this season. The midfielder has established an excellent partnership with Scott Parker in the centre of the pitch and both have been effective as Spurs have had a good run of form since the early defeats to the Manchester clubs.
According to the Mirror, Chelsea are very interested in Modric and could go as far as offering a part-exchange deal involving fan favorite Frank Lampard going the other way. Lampard has been very consistent for Chelsea and though he could be excellent for Spurs, Harry Redknapp would not want to risk selling Modric especially with them having a tough set of fixtures in February and March which could determine their hopes for securing a Champions League qualification.
Probable Destinations: If Spurs do finally decide to sell Modric, then Chelsea are the favorites to sign the midfielder who is one of their major targets.
10. Mario Goetze (Borussia Dortmund)
Mario Goetze is one of the best young players in the world and despite being only 19 years of age, he has attracted the attention of plenty of clubs around the world. He has established himself as one of Borussia Dortmund's most important player and manager Jurgen Klopp would look to retain him for as long as possible. However, there always remains the possibility of a transfer considering that the Gunners are very interested in the midfielder and Dortmund could need the money acquired from the sale.
According to Talksport, Arsenal are interested in the player and have been told by Borussia Dortmund to pay a minimum of £30 million for him if they do decide to sell. Goetze has been tracked by a number of top clubs including the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid and Arsenal are looking to put in a early bid to seal the signing of Goetze.
Probable Destination: It is not certain if Borussia Dortmund would sell the midfielder in January but Arsenal look to be heavily interested in the player though some other club could also be interested if there is a chance to sign the German international
