BCS Rankings: Coaches Cheat Oklahoma State Ranking Cowboys Behind Alabama

David DanielsDec 4, 2011

Rankings should be impacted more by who a team defeats, not who defeated that team.

Oklahoma State is currently ranked third in the BCS standings and in the latest coaches poll, they failed to leapfrog Alabama for the No. 2 spot.  Coaches and fans alike are blinded by SEC hype to believe that the Crimson Tide played the more difficult schedule.  Not Alabama, but the Cowboys are the squad with the superior resume, and they deserve to receive a bid to the national championship.

OK-State slaughtered the Oklahoma Sooners 44-10 this past Saturday to win the Big 12 title.  Alabama watched the Cowboys’ domination as they didn’t even make their conference championship.  Their conference crown alone isn’t the only reason why Mike Gundy and company are far more worthy.

While the Crimson Tide’s only victories over currently ranked opponents include Arkansas and Penn State, Oklahoma State boasts wins against Kansas State and Baylor on top of Oklahoma.  Alabama will point to the Cowboys’ loss to Iowa State compared to their own to No. 1 ranked LSU.  Again, the quality of a team that knocks off a favorite like Oklahoma State is overrated in the polls.

Anyone can experience a letdown on any given Saturday.  Losses don’t truly tell how talented a team is, but wins do; wins show a team's potential, their ceiling.  A college football team is only as good as the teams it defeats, and Justin Blackmon’s crew has recorded more high-quality Ws than Alabama.

The Crimson Tide are more talented than OK-State.  They field nearly double-digit prospects that’ll be taken in the first two days of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Being better on paper should mean absolutely nothing in the polls, though.

The most talented teams don’t merit a national championship bid; the most deserving teams do.  Oklahoma State is without a doubt the more deserving ball club.
