I have not spoken much on this, but I do expect a new defensive coordinator, a new defensive line coach, and possibly a new defensive backs and linebackers coaches. Bradley Dale Peveto has already left to become a head coach, Doug Mallory has at least one offer to be a defensive coordinator somewhere, and Earl Lane has an offer at FAU.
Lot of rumors out there:
My take on defensive coordinator is former Tennessee DC John Chavis and current UCLA DC DeWayne Walker would have to turn down offers (or take other offers prior to getting an offer from LSU) for coach Miles to get to the next names on his list (former Syracuse DC Greg Robinson, Pitt DC and former LSU coach Phil Bennett, Miami Dolphin LB coach George Edwards, USC DC Nick Holt, and others)
I like Walker, Chavis, and Bennett and any of them would excel in Baton Rouge, IMHO.
For the defensive line position, I think Lane is getting a bit of a bad rap; he has opened doors in Florida in terms of recruiting and has been an overall positive for LSU's staff. However, much like Peveto, their gold star plus is recruiting and the staff has to have a mix, good technique teachers, gameplanners, recruiters, motivators, etc.
The 2008 version of the staff is heavy on recruiting and could use some work in gameplanning and technique. The team is are 7-5 and currently has the No. 1 rated recruiting class, according to Rivals.com.
That said, I still see the staff next year without coach Lane.
His replacement talk (at least among LSU fans on the message boards) has focused on former Ole Miss head coach, USC and Miami assistant, and current Saints defensive line coach Ed "Bebe" Orgeron. Coach O will have options to stay with Payton in New Orleans, go to Knoxville with Lane Kiffin, or come to BR.
There are rumors on various sites that Orgeron has offers in hand from all three of those for next year. On the LSU boards, several think he will be in BR; on the UT boards, they think he ends up with Kiffin, so who knows? I have a few other names that have been rumored, but let's wait to see how Bebe shakes out.
Depending on how the defensive coordinator position ends up, LSU will be looking for a linebackers or a defensive backs coach. If Walker is the DC, he has exp with DB's, so LB will most likely be the hole. Former Auburn LB coach James Willis is a name mentioned often.
If it is Chavis, Willis could still be in the mix, but DB becomes more likely; several names have emerged, including former LSU DB and current S&C assistant Corey Raymond. Again, not to much of a point to speculate until we know the DC.
All these sites have info/rumors if you want the latest scuttlebutt. Some are free; some are pay sites:
There are others, but that is a could place to start for LSU rumors.
