The Philadelphia Flyers have found themselves in a bit of a pickle as of late, being hit hard with the injury bug. Some of Philadelphia's regulars have been hurt or sick, and it seems like the Flyers just can't catch a break. It's tough to win hockey games when guys like Pronger, Bryzgalov, Jagr, Lilja and JvR are out of the lineup.
Philadelphia's blue line has probably been hit the hardest. It's no secret Chris Pronger is a huge part of their defensive corps, and it seems like whenever he's not on the ice, it's a nail-biter. With all of Pronger's injuries and sicknesses over the past few years, the Flyers are starting to get a bit worried about just how much Pronger has left in the gas tank.
With Lilja also out of the lineup, and Bartulis almost surely to be claimed off re-entry waivers if he were to be called up, the Flyers are between a rock and a hard place. Rookies Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon have stepped up and filled the gaping void on the blue line for now, but it's clear by now that this isn't going to work out for the rest of the season. The bottom line is, the Flyers need another defenseman.
Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has already made it fairly public this week that he was looking for a defenseman, but claimed that there were many other teams looking for one as well, and that it could be tough to trade for one. It pretty much leaves Paul Holmgren with two choices: overpay for a defenseman, or sign a free agent.
Enter Bryan McCabe.
Bryan played with the New York Rangers last year after he was traded from the Florida Panthers for Tim Kennedy and a third-round draft choice. In 19 games with the Rangers last year, he tallied two goals and four assists, and he looked pretty solid for the Rangers. While Bryan is most likely heading toward the end of his hockey career at age 36, he could certainly give the Flyers a stable defensive lineup and would fit in well with Philly.
Would you like to see the Flyers sign Bryan McCabe?
The best part is, McCabe is a free agent, which means the Flyers could sign him to a short-term deal without having to risk losing somebody like Bartulis. The only real issue here would be the money.
How much is he still worth? McCabe had a hefty cap hit before becoming a free agent ($5.75 million), and it's pretty clear the Flyers wouldn't be able to swing that. With that being said, McCabe would likely sign a short-term deal for less money, as he is over 35 and probably doesn't plan on playing for more than another five years.
If I was Paul Holmgren, I'd be all over this guy right now. He's a great defenseman who has won numerous gold medals, and he's a great setup man. He also has a blistering shot from the point, something the Flyers could certainly use more of, especially with Pronger being ill.
In the last week, Bryan's name has been mentioned a few times in rumors, and some have even gone on to say that he's been talking with a team or two. Let's hope the Flyers are looking into this and can work out a deal that won't strap them even worse.
What say you? Would you like the Flyers to snatch up Bryan McCabe?
