The Chicago Bears' Real Hope
The Chicago Bears' playoff ambition lives through another Sunday thanks to some help from the Atlanta Falcons. The Bears still need to win out to have any chance to make the playoffs, and a league where mediocrity is widespread and all bets are off come playoff time, anything can happen.
But that's not what Bears fans should really be hoping for.
No, the Bears' big problem, as it is seemingly for all Chicago sports franchises one way or another, is their owner. Namely in this case, the McCaskeys. For the Bears to enjoy any kind of sustained success, for them to really change the way that their fans hope for, they first need to drastically change their front office. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as it sounds.
The Chicago Blackhawks had William Wirtz running their franchise into the ground for over a decade until his death and his son Rocky took over and so began their revitalization.
I don't want Virginia McCaskey to die, but changes have to be made to avert a disaster like this. It's been over 20 years since the Bears last won the Super Bowl. And for that it took the greatest defense of all time to accomplish. Traditionally, that's been their mantra, defense first. The McCaskeys always followed this.
But after a few decades goes by and it hasn't worked since, when is it time to seriously question it? For the kind of Bears team that they want, in order for them to succeed long term, they need to have a defense like the Ravens do and an offense much like the Steelers had for a few years now. And they don't. It's as simple as that.
