Panthers Defenseless in Detroit

On the last of Detroit running back Kevin Smith's three touchdowns Sunday, three of the Panthers' starting defensive backs had a shot to tackle him. All three wound up grasping at air with their heads down, staring at the artificial turf. It was that kind of day for the Carolina defense, which whiffed on tackles, coughed up a 17-point lead, and made Smith look like Barry Sanders in a 49-35 loss to the Lions in front of a crowd of 63,633 at Ford Field.
