We can make all the arguments we want against the Houston Cougars for their weak strength of schedule but that fact is, they are legit.

And regardless of who you’re playing, when a team averages 55 points and over 450 passing yards per game, that’s insanely good as well as impressive. Not to mention, Houston ranks No. 1 in points and pass yards per game.

As for SMU, well, their offense only manages 27 points and 290 pass yards per game, but it’s still solid enough to warrant some recognition. That being said, the question is whether their defense can step up and minimize the Cougars offense.

Currently the Mustangs defense allows just over 23 points per game which isn’t bad by any means. Only problem however, is that SMU has lost three of their last four games and gave up an average of 28 points in each of those games.

So, although they somewhat decreased defensively, their offense clearly wasn’t up to par. Therefore, how can we expect SMU’s offense to keep pace with Houston when the Cougars defense is better?

We can’t and the Mustangs will not. By game’s end SMU will be fortunate to hold Houston to under 49 points and score maybe 24. So even with the spread that SMU won’t get enough.

Take Houston against the spread
