Paul Harris Spins Australia Into a Twisty Situation
As Day Three in the first test draws to a close, it has been difficult to ignore the efforts of the Proteas. Last time they were in Australia, they were outplayed (home and away) but now a more settled side, they are really giving the Aussies a run for their money.
I have been especially impressed with the way Paul Harris has bowled. The commentators are also impressed with his efforts. The way he was billed as a defensive bowler to tie up an end can't be any further from the fact. He has attacked very well during his spells taking some important wickets. Whether he is able to continue this great form throughout the test remains to be seen but at least there is hope that the Proteas can go close to win.
The last series between these two in Australia, the first test was very simillar but that game ended in a draw. Its hard to see the same happening. The rest of the five tests, both home and away were very one-sided in favour to Australia. This time Graeme Smith has said nothing to stir any problems showing he has matured as a captain. And in saying this Australia are not the team they were even last year but the signs are only good for South Africa.
Mention must be made of Mitchell Johnson's spell yesterday. He was magnificent but it has to be said. If Ashwell Prince were playing, would the collapse have been so dramatic? JP Duminy is a very classy batsman at domestic level but I don't think he can cut it at this elite level. Johnson though would have dismissed all the best in that spell and if he bowls something similar in the Second Dig, South Africa will be in huge trouble.
I believe Hashim Amla will be the important man in the Second Innings as he is in the best form of all the "Saffas." He is also probably the best equipped to bat on this average WACA strip. All that can be said for certain is that this has been one of the best tests this year. (After India's great win against England in Chennai). But there is still plenty that could happen.
