2008 Bowl Season Dream Games
What would happen if we got rid of all the conference affiliations, records, standings and just matched up teams based on how good the game would be? Would Florida still end up facing Oklahoma in the National Championship? The following factors were taken into consideration: traveling distance, fan traveling, close to equal chance at beating their opponent, records and conference affiliation did not play a part.
These are just a select few of the match ups. To read the entire list, visit the full article at Pigskinheaven.com.
Poinsettia Bowl: Wake Forest Vs Arizona
At this point we are left with no more than two teams from a conference, which sets up nicely for this game. Two decent teams from the Pac-10 and ACC. I hope the traveling distance won't hurt Wake Forest. Both teams have defenses on par with each other and Quarterbacks that are fun to watch.
Papajohns.com Bowl: Connecticut Vs Houston
We need a location that won't cater to either style. A classic defense and offense game that pits the top yardage team in the Nation against one of the top defenses in the Nation. The problem is their counter-units. Donald Brown might be able to take advantage of a weak Houston run defense while Houston's middle of the road passing defense might have an easier time containing Connecticut's weak passing attack.
Humanitarian Bowl: Nevada Vs Louisiana-Lafayette
Nevada stays in this game to take on another high octane rushing offense. Tyrell Fenroy and Michael Desormeaux are a capable tandem to Vai Taua and Colin Kaepernick. This is going to be exciting.
Sun Bowl: Rutgers Vs Rice
This is personally one of my favorite pairings. Can the Rutgers defense stop the explosive tandem of Chase Clement and Jarrett Dillard? Will the roll that Rutgers has been on continue to into the Bowl Season? Don't forget that the Scarlet Knights can score as of late.
Music City Bowl: Oregon State Vs Iowa
Two talented runners in JaQuizz Rogers and Shonn Greene in this one. The added wrinkle is the fact that Iowa's rush defense is very good but can they contain some of the play makers the Beavers have in the passing game? This one is in Tennessee which plays into the fact the teams have to run the ball.
Capital One Bowl: Pittsburgh Vs Michigan State
There are only two names I need to give you. Javon Ringer and LeSean McCoy.
Gator Bowl: Georgia Tech Vs Mississippi
The Paul Johnson Option taking on the innovative Houston Nutt and his Wild Rebel formation. These two offenses will be interesting to watch against each other because they are....interesting.
Cotton Bowl: BYU Vs Ohio State
Here is yet another test for the Mountain West. That would be putting their most potent offense up against one of the best defenses in the Nation in Ohio State. BYU can play and here is yet another shot for the Mountain West to show they can hang with the big conferences. I'm not sure why I have them facing Big Ten teams but it worked out that way.
Rose Bowl: Texas Tech Vs Boise State
You ready to light up the scoreboard? This game is going to do exactly that. We needed to match a team to Texas Tech that didn't have an overwhelming defense, like Tech's, but also an offense that could put up big points anytime they touch the ball. Boise State fits that bill and both teams would be traveling West.
Orange Bowl: TCU Vs USC
We needed a team that had the defense to try and slow USC down, but had a chance to score some points. There are much better candidates out there, but they are all off the board for better games. There simply are an odd amount of "Great Teams" that could pair up with each other. The original game should be a good one, but TCU has a defense that can surprise people. Do they have the offense to get it done? I don't know, but they are fundamentally sound to not get themselves in a hole against a team like USC.
Sugar Bowl: Utah Vs Penn State
I think a team like USC is too good for Utah to have a chance against and a team like Cincinnati isn't good enough to prove themselves. Which makes Penn State as close as you are going to get to a team that is beatable, but a challenge for Utah to prove themselves against. This won't be the winner of sexiest matchup but to me would be one that I have to watch just in terms of how well it could be played by both sides.
Fiesta Bowl: Texas Vs Alabama
Taking into mind the fact that all the other BCS Bowls would be bad in terms of travel for one team or the other, the Fiesta Bowl makes sense to have both Texas and Alabama. Texas probably has a better offense than Alabama, but this is a well rounded and even game with both teams.
National Title Game: Florida Vs Oklahoma
You might be saying, what's up with not changing the National Title Game? I say, surprisingly if you were to pick the two best teams in the Nation based off just overall talent that these would be the two teams you would pick. This also provides a very entertaining game of high powered offenses.
