The Carolina Panthers need to resign Jeremy Shockey, as Cam Newton would say, simple and plain. Shockey is a four-time Pro Bowler and two time Super Bowl winner. He is one of only three current Panthers with Super Bowl experience, along with Jordan Gross and Steve Smith.

His experience and attitude have been keys in turning this organization around. Although wins have still been hard to come by, it has been evident in the change of culture.

Panther fans now have reason to watch the games and have one of the most electrifying players as their leader.  Cam Newton's rookie success has been helped by the pieces around him.  One of those is the aforementioned Jeremy Shockey.

This past offseason he surprisingly signed with the two and 14 Carolina Panthers.  He was the first notable Panthers tight end acquisition since Wesley Walls in the beginning years of the franchise.  Many thought Shockey was over the hill and in the weaning stages of his career.

However, he has proved his doubters wrong like fellow Panthers Steve Smith and Cam Newton.  Shockey looks as capable as ever and is having another quality season.

While the days of Shockey going to the Pro Bowl are gone, he is still a more than serviceable tight end. Every Sunday, you see an exuberant Shockey jumping around playing the game with the excitement of a rookie.  Shockey is currently in a one-year contract with the Panthers.  However, Shockey has publicly stated that he would like to stay with this organization.

General Manager Marty Hurney needs to resign the man.  Shockey is vital in Cam Newton's development and is a key third down target along with Greg Olsen.  Shockey has already had an excellent career in which he has caught 533 passes for 5,980 yards and 34 touchdowns.  The former Miami Hurricane has reunited with former coach Rob Chudzinski and calls him family.

Shockey deserves a two or three year extension which would help solidify an already lethal passing attack.  The wild, partying Shockey has matured and he is now a model teammate.  He also brings a pass-blocking ability that the Panthers need in pass protection and to help open up running lanes.

The 2002 Rookie of the Year winner is still a bit of a headcase, but brings leadership and a swagger to the young Panthers. He also brings a history of winning and knows that the future is very bright in Carolina. Re-signing Jeremy Shockey should be one of the first things the Panthers do this offseason.
