Say it ain't so, Joe! As for you Patrick, we'll be seein' ya.

Today, the Senators shipped defenceman Joe Corvo and forward Patrick Eaves to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Cory Stillman and defenceman Mike Commodore.

Pretty good deal.

Both Stillman and Commodore are unrestricted free agents as of July 1, with a combined three Cups between them.

Commodore brings some much needed defensive skills to the Capital, while Stillman is no stranger to putting the biscuit in the basket. He's racked up 55 points so far this season and should be a welcome addition on the second line with Mike Fisher.

It's too bad for Eaves, though.

Hampered by nagging shoulder injuries, his season never really started. He's too small and won't last long in this league, especially if he gets hit hard again.

As for Joe Corvo, he's been a decent addition to the power play with a canon of a clapper, but still struggles defensively and has confidence issues. He's expected to be a fixture on the 'Canes power play, which ranks 17th in the league. Getting rid of Joe also opens up some cap room for next year, as he is set to make $2.75 million.

I believe this trade is a sign of things to come in the Nation's Capital. With Stillman filling up that coveted top-six forward position that everyone in the city was begging for, who's next to suit up for the Sens Army?

Patrick Marleau?

Mats Sundin?

Jaromir Jagr?

Peter Forsberg?

There's a long list of possibilities.

From the looks of it, it's shaping up to be an active deadline in O-Town. Open up that cheque-book Melnyk!

  1. As much as I'd like it, I don't see Ottawa picking up anybody else before they end of the season. They made their move and got their guy that they think will provide secondary scoring, and I believe Stillman will prove up to the task. Playoffs are his bread and butter. The cap space will indeed be used to bring Stillman back for another season, or signing a top-four defenseman this summer (whether or not it's Redden resigning or the Sens picking up a new body).

Both teams do benefit, but Carolina will probably be shipping Corvo off maybe this summer. Joe Corvo is a great powerplay defeseman, but after they see how much Corvo lacks defensively, they'll go looking for a Commodore-like type guy again. Eaves will eventually develop into a solid winger, but just has to learn to battle harder against guys bigger than him.

    Go Sens Go!

  2. Well put C. Depending on what Commodore does for the Sens this postseason, he could end up anywhere. I think Marleau could use a change in scenery, and I'd love for the Sens to acquire him. Who we'd give up is a tough decision. Do you think Murray would be willing to part with Vermette? Or is Marleau simply making too much coin to even consider? Loud 'n proud, baby. Go Sens Go

  3. Stillman has the ability to play the point on the PP so losing Corvo is a little easier to swallow from that perspective. We also still have Redden and Meszaros as puck movers. I know you'd like to have a D man on the point on the PP so Stillman isn't ideal - that being said Stillman can't be worse defensively than Corvo has been right?

  4. Ottawa is not finished yet! I live about 2 minutes from the Murray's (Brian and Timmy) and regularly speak with them at the local watering hole. They are actively seeking an offensive defenceman, steady goaltending and if possible- another Cory Stillman type forward. They have made numerous inquiries about Dan Boyle on D, Dwayne Roloson in goal and Alex Tanguay up front. To answer your question about Vermette, yes, they would deal him in a second! The problem they are having with managing trades is that no-one wants Emery or Gerber, and they are, so far, unwilling to trade Chris Neil or prospect Brian Lee. Something has got to give because they are not happy with the team yet.
