There are many talented linebackers in both the AFC and NFC this year.

Their ability to break through offensive lines, force turnovers and dominate the flow of the game are often the stuff of great highlight reels. They are the masters of dissecting offensive schemes and often don the mantle of squad captain—and for good reason.

Here is a breakdown of the top five most brutal through Week 8.

5: Aldon Smith

Starting off the list is Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers.

This rookie out of Missouri has proven his mettle and ability to hang with the big boys.

He has 13 combined tackles with 6.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

To top it all off, he adds a safety to his resume.

4: Tamba Hali

Tamba Hali of the Kansas City Chiefs is an emerging name in the elite of NFL linebackers.

This 6'2", 275-pound nightmare has been marauding around the field, dominating offensive lines and QBs alike.

He has 33 combined tackles, six sacks and a forced fumble.

This brute will be one to keep your eye on as KC steps up in their division.

3: DeMarcus Ware

Coming in at No. 3 is the formidable DeMarcus Ware of the Dallas Cowboys.

This staple of the Dallas defense has plagued offenses for years.

He has a combined 31 tackles, 12 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Needless to say, he has caused many NFL players to have sleepless nights.

Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens comes in at No. 2 on this list.

His 33 combined tackles and six sacks have established his early dominance in the league.

His ability to get turnovers, however, was the leading factor in putting him in the coveted No. 2 spot.

Two forced fumbles and an interception is nothing to sneeze at for this linebacker.

1: LaMarr Woodley

LaMarr Woodley of the Pittsburgh Steelers takes the top spot in this countdown.

He has been an unforgiving beast on gameday and a dirge to opposing offenses.

His rampaging across the gridiron has given him 36 combined tackles and a commanding nine sacks.

He even has an interception to add to his resume.
