Eddie Alvarez Wanted to Buy a Stake in Bellator
Usually boxing is the sport where fighters want to get into promoting, but recently Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez tried to buy a stake into the promotional company.
According to a recent SI.com article, Alvarez, who is considered one of the best fighters no to be in the UFC was reportedly nervous when he heard about Strikeforce being bought up. Alvarez wanted to buy a stake in the company so that if the UFC did decide to buy the rival American promotion he would see some of the profits of said sale.
Instead, Viacom ended up buying Bellator which is the parent company of Spike.
When the UFC locked into a seven year deal with Fox though Alvarez mentioned that he saw Bellator as Spike's replacement for MMA. Though Bellator will be broadcast on Spike TV it won't happen until 2013 as the deal with the UFC to show their library runs out at the end of 2012.
Until then Spike can't broadcast any other MMA program.
This could be good for both the fans and the promotion. Spike will give Bellator a platform that is bigger than any it has had before.
And fans can be certain that the UFC will continue to have competition now that Viacom has purchased their only real rival.
