Ron Santo and Pat Hughes Are a Must Listen
A few years back, I activated my XM radio and began shuffling through the channels to find a day baseball game. Seeing as there aren't as many to choose from these days, I happened upon the Chicago Cubs.
The announcers had received an email from a listener in Munster, Ind. The game wasn't all that entertaining, so the announcers began to have a discussion about The Munsters TV show.
The announcers were Ron Santo and Pat Hughes, and what followed was one of the funniest things I had ever heard during a baseball broadcast. Santo began confusing the characters from The Munsters, The Addams Family and somehow The Beverly Hillbillies! If you haven't heard this broadcast, its a must-hear.
Hughes plays the perfect straight man to Santo's confused craziness. These two work so well together they could read the phone book on the air and find a way to make it entertaining. Even during a blowout game, I don't turn the channel.
On top of the entertaining interaction between the two, Santo's genuine emotions toward the Cubs and the game of baseball are refreshing. You can hear an occasional, "ahh, man" or "oh geez" in the background before Hughes even gets a chance to announce what happened. You can almost hear him getting sick to his stomach every time the Cubs make a bonehead play.
Then there's the emotions when the Cubs do well. He screams "YES, YESSSS" at the top of his lungs, not the manufactured excitement that you get with a lot of announcers these days. It's like sitting on the couch at home drinking a beer and watching a game with a couple of your buddies.
Ron, you may not have made it to the Hall of Fame, but you and Pat are No. 1 in my book. Keep up the good work and this diehard Red Sox fan will keep listening. Yes, I said Red Sox fan!
