New Washington Head Coach Steve Sarkisian has given former Husky linebacker E.J. Savannah a chance to come back to to the Purple and Gold.
He was leading tackler in the 2007 season, and one of the marquee players in the first recruiting class of Tyrone Willingham. Yet after poor academic performance and off-field issues he was to be suspended for the 2008 season, and in the end decided to leave the program.
He's been given a chance to redeem himself to the new Head Coach, who claimed in his first press conference all the players were being given a "clean slate" to start from.
While obviously its nice to see a young man get a chance at redemption, the defense needs help badly. After two consecutive years of the worst defenses in Husky history, help is at a premium.
Savannah himself was quoted as saying he didn't look at any other schools to transfer too and instead focused on working out and adding muscle.
"I never wanted to leave UW," Savannah said to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.
Savannah will be a welcome addition to a unit that was solid but perhaps overwhelmed during the full season. If Trenton Tuiasasopo returns that will mean a full complement of returning linebackers plus Savannah, which should make for a much more formidable center to the defense next season.
Sarkisian is slowly but incredibly surely shaking up the Huskies foundations and distancing himself from the Tyrone Willingham era. It will be interesting to see over the next year how it all plays out.
