Over the past ten years the NHL has averaged approximately 5.5 goals per game. That equates to more than 6700 goals scored in a regular 82 game season. If you add the playoffs into that and, well, that's a lot of goals in a single season.
The NHL was founded in 1917 and although the 82 game schedule has not always been in place, the idea that picking the 50 most important goals in NHL history is a pretty daunting task, but always up for a challenge, I decided to take it on.
In the list you will find goals that delivered a Stanley Cup, goals of meaning to a player or a team, goals that set records and goals that ended games in important ways, in short the criteria for landing on this list was a bit open, but all the goals are significant in some way.
With all that being said, enjoy the 50 most important goals in NHL history.
