Packing for Vegas: College Basketball Picks Dec. 10

Andrew KahnCorrespondent IDecember 10, 2008

Virginia Tech just can't get a break. Look at the heartbreaking losses the Hokies have already dealt with this season:

  • A one-point loss on a halfcourt buzzer beater against Xavier in overtime
  • A four-point loss to Seton Hall
  • A two-point loss to Wisconsin on a last-second shot

Add Tech's latest crushing defeat, a one-point loss to Georgia last night. So maybe when the spread is only 3.5, I should stay away from the Hokies, since they have proven they are adept at losing the close game.

Anyway, tonight I'm putting my money behind one of the most complete teams in the country, Gonzaga (-4.5 at Washington State). Don't be scared that it's in Pullman. The Cougars lost to Baylor at home no more than four days ago.

The bottom line is, while this WSU team still plays tough defense, it just doesn't have enough offensive weapons. The Cougs have a freshman guard that leads them in scoring, and Baynes and Rochestie are nice players, but they really miss Weaver, Low, and even Cowgill, who provided some supplemental scoring.

Gonzaga simply has too much firepower and should win this game by at least 10.

I'm also taking TCU in a pick 'em game at Indiana. I'm 3-1 betting against IU this year, and I hope my winning ways continue tonight. TCU is 7-3 with wins over Western Michigan, Colorado, and Wichita State. The win at Colorado is enough for me, even though the Buffs did lose to Montana State at home. Whatever—go Horned Frogs!

Today's picks: Gonzaga -4.5; 2 units

                      TCU 0; 1 unit

Season Record: 17-9 (65 percent); +14.1 units
