Daily Haze: Week 8 Bye Week Replacements

Daily Haze, fantasy football, NFL, sports news

It is easy for fantasy owners not to care about bye weeks during fantasy drafts. Take the best player available, regardless of the bye week. You can always find a replacement on the waiver wire, or just tank one week and win the rest.

Easy, unless your fantasy team has started the 2011 season at the bottom on your league(s).

With bye weeks hitting the schedule this weekend in the NFL, some fantasy owners are in panic mode after lackluster starts. Hard to ride out the bye weeks when there are injuries and underwhelming players with which to deal.

Luckily, there is a place to go for help when your fantasy team is struggling with bye weeks. It is called the waiver wire. And while the options there sometimes feel a little cheap and second-hand, fantasy owners sometimes can find the right fit for a one-week spot filler.

Week 8 Byes: Byes: Falcons, Bears, Packers, Jets, Raiders, Buccaneers

Quarterbacks

John Beck @ Bills
Good first start, even though the Redskins lost. The loss of weapons Santana Moss, Tim Hightower and Chris Cooley does hurt.

Shaun Hills @ Broncos
If Matthew Stafford is out this weekend, you could do worse than Hill. Remember he was own-able last year with Stafford out.

Christian Ponder @ Panthers
Looked good in his first start against the defending champs, his mobility adds to the fantasy intrigue.

Running Backs

Delone Carter @ Titans
The only bright spot for the Colts against the Saints in Week 7, with 89 yards and a touchdown.

Roy Helu @ Bills
Decent matchup on the road, should see plenty more snaps with Tim Hightower out for the year.

Bernard Scott @ Seahawks
Not a great matchup but he gets the start and should get a ton of touches.

Wide Receivers

Nate Burleson @ Broncos
Decent matchup on the road and Champ Bailey figures to be watching Calvin Johnson closely.

Devery Henderson @ Rams
This is just a gut feeling. Been so quiet lately, seems poised to hit a home-run this weekend.

Jabar Gaffney @ Bills
No Santana Moss makes Gaffney the go-to receiver. Decent stats every week, could see an uptick in looks now.

Tight Ends

Lance Kendricks v. Saints
Terrible game last week with A.J. Feeley at QB, needs Sam Bradford to be a decent fill-in this weekend. Good matchup, though.

Here are today’s great reads:

  • Look at target data from Week 7 and you will notice a trend: There are a lot of Buccaneers on the list. The Bucs fell behind early against Chicago and lost Earnest Graham to a season-ending injury, so all that really was left was for Josh Freeman to chuck the ball around London on Sunday. [Roto Arcade]
  • I read a good one-line on Twitter yesterday. It said something to the effect of Week 7 being a good week for your best fantasy players to be on bye. That is because there were more than enough injuries to go around, and some pretty devastating ones at that. Hope you avoided the injury bug plague of Week 7. [ESPN.com]
  • The NFL hits midseason this weekend, while fantasy leagues are more than past the halfway mark. First-half surprises in fantasy leagues including a pair of rookies and a few seasoned veterans. [FantasyPros]
  • Fantasy observations from Week 7, including players to buy and sell going forward. I really like Philip Rivers as a buy with Antonio Gates back in the fold. But how long can Gates stick around this time? And will Rivers stop throwing picks? [RotoProfessor]
