Now that the first BCS rankings are out, let’s digest who is overrated. The Clemson Tigers and Kansas State Wildcats are a two teams that are overrated by the system. Here is why I believe they are overrated.

Penn State

Penn State is ranked No. 21 in the BCS rankings. Their best victory this season was at 5-2 Temple. Their best conference win was against an average Iowa team at home.

Both victories are average ones.

In the biggest game of their season, at home, they lost to Alabama 27-11.

Penn State has barely gotten by Indiana and Purdue. The combined record of these two teams is 4-9.

Their schedule is about to beef up in the next couple of weeks. Northwestern is their opponent on Saturday, and it will be a tough test for the Nittany Lions. Even though Northwestern is 2-4, the Wildcats have the ability to pull off the upset at home.

After that game, Penn State plays Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin. They won’t break the top 25 after their tough finish to the season.

Kansas State

A pleasant surprise has been Kansas State in 2011. However, with the meat of their schedule looking them dead in the face, we are about to see why they are overrated.

Not only has Kansas State not defeated a quality out-of-conference team (Miami is 3-3) but they haven’t played the top teams in their league yet—unless you count Baylor, which I don’t. Don’t worry, they will soon.

After a trip to 2-4 Kansas, the Wildcats will play four top-25 teams, including Oklahoma at home later this month. They will travel the following week to Stillwater, Okla. to face a top-five ranked Oklahoma State team.

Kansas State is a top-25 team in 2011, but they are highly overrated at No. 11.

Virginia Tech

The Hokies have been sitting around the middle of the pack in the rankings this season. They sit at No. 12. We haven’t heard too much from them.

In their marquee game of the season—versus No. 13 Clemson—they got destroyed at home, 23-3. It’s not that they lost to a quality team that is discouraging, but it's how they lost to Clemson.

Frank Beamer teams play well at home with a late start. Not in this game.

They struggled against an average Miami team at home. They struggled on the road at East Carolina, a squad that is 2-4 on the season.

What started out as a solid conference, the ACC has already seen their peak in 2011. Because of that, Virginia Tech has a great chance of running the table.

However, the big test will come at Georgia Tech on November 10. We will see what kind of team shows up in that game.

There is no question that Clemson is a solid club this season. However, what seemed like three-straight ranked victories look a little suspect in retrospect. Florida State isn’t ranked anymore and Auburn has slipped up more than once in 2011. Virginia Tech is a team that is overrated as well.

All three victories are still solid, but aren't as great as people believe. Two of those victories came at home, too.

Clemson will have a few tests at the end of their schedule. They play Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and South Carolina on the road and play North Carolina and Wake Forest at home.

I fully expect Clemson to take care of home field, but I do expect one or two slip-ups on the road or in their conference championship game.
