WVU Dismissals: Bill Stewart Sends the Right Message

On Thursday, West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart dismissed RB Ed Collington, LB John Holmes, and DT James Ingram for, well, being boneheaded idiots.

Technically, they were arrested not only for possession of weed, but, even better, with intent to distribute.

Ingram went so far as to tell the cops he had dope at home and, hey, why not come on back to my apartment and I’ll show you?

Proving the idiocy, as if any proof were needed.

The scuttlebutt out of Morgantown is that Stewart believes the former head football coach and even Coach Nehlen before him were too easy on team offenders.

Before the 2007 season started, CB Ellis Lankster and LB J.T. Thomas were arrested for boosting a laptop from a party and then telling cops, when pulled over, that they’d bought the computer in a McDonald’s parking lot.

The pair were suspended for a few weeks, got a legal slap on the wrist, and ended up playing in most of the team's games.

And don’t forget former CB Pacman Jones, who as a freshman whipped some poor student with a pool cue before going on to a long and fine career with the Mountaineers.

Before the Fiesta Bowl, Stewart told his players that if they got out of line, they’d pay the price—“Cub and Boy Scout honor.”

It’s good to see him keep his word.

    Scout Oath (or Promise)
    On my honor I will do my best
    To do my duty to God and my country
    and to obey the Scout Law;
    To help other people at all times;
    To keep myself physically strong,
    mentally awake, and morally straight;
    To dismiss any bonehead who breaks
    curfew, uses the Lord's name in vain,
    or possesses dope with the intent to deliver.

    If they don't want their scholarships, others will take them and use them to get an education. You have to not be stupid in this world if you would like to advance. These three didn't seem that they wanted it badly enough. Their loss.

    Little tough on them for intent to distribute weed. I'm pretty sure I didn't know a single kid in college who didn't either buy or sell at least once.

    I don't like ruining a kids life for one mistake. Little too harsh... nobody's dead... suspend them, give them one more chance, probation, etc.

    It's a bitter pill to swallow, but maybe it will make those players as well as other players think twice about doing stuff like that. I understand that marijuana is not neccessarily an addictive drug, but unfortunately is treated like one here in the states.

    I'm proud of coach Stew. He needs to establish his authority immediately and that appears to be what he's doing.
