The Lord giveth, and he taketh away.
Despite what some people might say, Tyrann Mathieu had a chance for a Heisman. He's a game changer for the LSU Tigers, but as the curse of SI would have it, now there's a chance he could be a poster boy for the Tigers blowing their chance at winning it all in 2011.
That's because Mathieu and star running back Spencer Ware were suspended for failing drugs tests today. So was defensive back Tharold Simon. Whether it was performance-enhancing or the dreaded weed, it wasn't good, they got caught and now they are out with their, ahem, tails between their legs.
Ware's run for 512 yards and six touchdowns. Simon has an interception and 29 tackles. And Matthieu, the possible defensive back Heisman selection with a mouth and a lot to back it up? He's forced four fumbles, had two INTs, 1 1/2 sacks and has 41 1/2 tackles. That's pretty impressive. For us, it's near-Heisman impressive (he'll certainly win the Defensive Player Of The Year).
According to CBS (amongst others), they are only going to be suspended for the Auburn game so won't miss out on Armageddon aka The Alabama game on November 5, which we're all really, really excited about.
As for Mathieu's Twitter account, anyone following it avidly (we don't, sorry!), would have seen the icing on the wall.
If you look into it, there's some lovely stuff about his girl, but a lot of it also says: "I really screwed up and I promise not to do it again," too.
