Flyers vs. Hurricanes- December 6, 2008-Raleigh, NC.

Notes: The Flyers are coming into the game at 12-7-6 and 7-1-2 in their last 10. The Canes' are 12-12-2 and are 4-6 in their last 10. For Carolina, Justin Williams returns to play the Flyers tonight after making his early return to the team earlier this week.

The Orange and Black are 11-1-4 when they score first while the Hurricanes are 4-4-1. Simon Gagne is in the lineup tonight along with Kimmo Timonen. Entering this game the Flyers have the 3rd ranked power play in the league, scoring 24 percent of the time.

Goals: PHI-RICHARDS(11) Shorthanded, Assists-Gagne(12), 3:59.

PP: PHI-0/0 CAR-0/4

PK: PHI-4/4 CAR-0/0

Shots: PHI-6 CAR-11

Notes

That shorthanded goal by Richards was his 4th of the season and the teams NHL leading 11th shorthander of the season. This Flyers club continues to dominate the league in shorthanded tallies.

The Flyers have won nine out of their last 10 when they have scored first.

Also, Mike Richards leads the NHL with 11 shorthanded goals in the last three seasons. The Flyers were shorthanded four times in the 1st period which is a lot, I expect coach Stevens to address that issue and rectify it.

2nd Period:

Penalty: CAR-Leighton-Delay of Game(2:00), 5:01. CAR-Conboy-High Sticking(2:00), 17:32. PHI-Sbisa-Tripping(2:00), 19:20.

Goals: NONE

PP: PHI-0/2 CAR-0/5

PK: PHI-5/5 CAR-2/2

Shots: PHI-14  CAR-8

Notes

Very quiet period for both teams, not as much action in the penalty box this time around. The Flyers managed to fire eight shots off with no reward. Both defenses played well rounded hockey. The Flyers will have to attack quick in the third because one goal will not win this game. It seems that Coach Stevens corrected the teams penalty issues in the first period.

3rd Period

Penalty: PHI-Gagne-Interference(2:00), CAR-Staal-Roughing(2:00), 13:21.

Goals: CAR-Samsonov(3) power play, Assists-Whitney(12), Pitkanen(10), 55 seconds.

PP: PHI-0/2 CAR-1/6

PK: PHI-1/6 CAR-0/2

Shots: PHI-8 CAR-12

Notes

Another bad period for both teams except for the lucky goal by Samsonov. The ice surface got progressively worse as the third period got further along. The Flyers are now entering overtime for the fourth time in five games.

Overtime

Penalty:

Goal: PHI-Carter(19) Unassisted, 3:34

Notes

Flyers win the game in overtime with a faceoff blast by Jeff Carter. That was Carter's 19th goal of the season and he is now leading the NHL is gaols scored. The Flyers get away with a sloppy two points to give them 32 on the season.

The Flyers are now 8-1-2 in their last 11. Antero Niittymaki stopped 35 of 36 shots from the Hurricanes, great goaltending by Niitty. The Flyers only had two power plays this entire game, kudos to Carolina.

Total Shots: PHI-31 CAR-36
