BCS Rankings 2011: Oklahoma State and Teams That Will Disappoint the Computers
You get the feeling that the first BCS rankings are like Christmas: It is an exciting time that college football fans always pay attention to, but when it is over you are left kicking and screaming because you didn't get the one big present, or as high of a ranking, as expected.
That is why it is best to take the BCS in small doses. Don't pay attention to everything that it does, just focus on the positives and rest assured that there are still six more weeks to turn things around.
With that said, there are still some very big problems with the first rankings of 2011. No one is going to agree with everything, of course, but some of the decisions that the computers made are baffling.
Here are three teams that will make the BCS look foolish before the season is over.
No. 4 Oklahoma State Cowboys
If I were to ask you who the No. 1 team in the country was, the choices would likely be LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma. Not according to the BCS computers, though.
After calculating all the stats and crunching all the numbers, the supercomputers that comprise a large portion of the BCS rankings have Oklahoma State as the top-ranked team in the country.
They ranked first overall in four of the six computers, which helped boost them up to the No. 4 spot in the first rankings of the season.
The Cowboys are fun to watch because they are explosive, but they are not one of the five-best teams in the country right now.
No. 11 Kansas State Wildcats
No, there is not a vendetta against the Big 12. There is, however, a question of what the computers see in that conference to rank Oklahoma State and Kansas State as highly as it does.
The Wildcats have a perfect 6-0 record, yes, but do they really deserve to be ranked ahead of Virginia Tech, Nebraska or even Michigan?
Head coach Bill Snyder is working his magic with this program again, and it makes for a great story, but there is no way that the Wildcats belong on the edge of the top 10 in the BCS rankings.
No. 19 Houston Cougars
Quickly and without looking, name the best team that Houston has beaten this season? That would be the mighty UCLA Bruins back in Week 1.
Houston is a lot like Oklahoma State, in that both schools have high-powered offenses and do not put a lot of thought into what will happen with the defense.
The Cougars are ranked 11th, 12th and 13th by three different computers in the BCS. There is no way that this team should be thought that highly of by any system, human or automated.
Given the fact that Houston’s schedule gets easier as the season moves along, I would expect their ranking to move down in subsequent weeks.
