Euro 2012: Top Group Storylines Going into the Final Match Day

1 of 11

One final day remains in the qualification group stage for the UEFA European Championships slated for the Summer of 2012.

England, Spain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands have all secured qualification with the remaining groups of B, D, F and H still up for grabs.

Other nations Russia, Sweden, France, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Portugal and Denmark all are guaranteed at least playoff appearances with a chance to reach the group stages next summer.

There are no shortage of scenarios for the majority of the groups on the final day and we will wait for the final whistle on Tuesday for all of it to finally be decided before the next stages of preparation begin for all of the European nations.

Group A

2 of 11

Group A already has a champion in the form of Germany.

They have the chance to lock up a perfect 10-0 qualification run if they indeed defeat neighboring Belgium in their final match on Tuesday.

However, Belgium will need to do all that they can to avoid such a thing happening.

Their victory over Kazakhstan gives them a one point advantage over Turkey who suffered defeat at the feet of Germany.

Turkey will be hoping to take a victory from lesser opponent Azerbaijan who sit on only seven points in the table and will be playing for pride and nothing more.

    Key Matches:

    Germany v Belgium

    Turkey v Azerbaijan

Group B

3 of 11

Russia holds a two point advantage over Ireland and a three point lead over Armenia.

The Russians should be a lock to take the first spot as they play against Andorra on Tuesday.

The real match of the group will be between Ireland and Armenia with the end results of their match having the ability to shake up the group.

If Ireland win, without Robbie Keane who is more than likely ruled out, then they are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, or at the top of the group should Russia somehow fall to Andorra.

Armenia could be the biggest winners as a Russian loss.

Their team securing a victory over Ireland would see them book their ticket in the group stage ousting the Russians at the top on goal difference.

    Key Matches:

    Ireland vs Armenia

    Russia vs Andorra

Group C

4 of 11

Italy are clean and clear at the top of the table.

They will hope to have a more successful 2012 European Championship campaign then they previous World Cup provided them.

Slovenia is currently on the outside looking in with no chance of qualification.

They will have the chance to play spoiler to Serbia on the final match day if they can pull of a victory.

The Serbs need only to draw to book a place in the playoffs as they have a one goal advantage over second place Estonia who have already played their full ten games.

    Key Match:

    Slovenia vs Serbia

Group D

5 of 11

France held onto their top place in Group D with a 3-0 victory over Albania while Bosnia-Herzegovina stayed hot on their tail with a 5-0 victory over Luxembourg.

Either way both clubs are going to have a shot at being involved in the European Championship.

If France slumps to a defeat they will be forced to fight it out in the playoffs rather than take a nine month break before next summer.

    Key Match:

    France vs Bosnia-Herzegovina

Group E

6 of 11

Group E has nothing really left to contest. The Netherlands are locked in as the group winners while Sweden are guaranteed the playoff spot thanks to a major goal differential.

The two group leaders face off in a match that will be a toss up.

The Dutch would love to take a victory and secure a perfect 10-0 record like Germany are hoping to have in Group A.

Sweden on the other hand will want to test their abilities as the preparation for their impending playoff tie will have to start immediately

There are few better opponents to test your abilities against other then the World Cup runners-up.

    Key Match:

    Sweden vs Netherlands

Group F

7 of 11

Greece will hope to secure their ticket for the group stages when they take on Georgia.

However, anything less than a win could be less than needed for the Grecians. They are a goal down to Croatia on goal differential which could prove their undoing.

If Croatia win with a better goal differential than Greece then they will be the ones with the golden ticket for next summer

Croatia will be leaving their fellow Balkan neighbors to slug it out through the playoffs.

It would be a nice stab back after they were defeated by the Greeks in their last match 2-0.

    Key Matches:

    Georgia vs Greece

    Croatia vs Latvia

Group G

8 of 11

Wayne Rooney will be ruing his red card for some time to come, but England did at least secure a draw which will see them have a clean shot to the group stages next summer.

The Montenegrin draw also locked them into the playoffs leaving the final match day of Group G rather dull.

Group H

9 of 11

Group H faces a fantastic final day with Denmark and Portugal both siting on 16 points at the top of the table.

The two of them will face off in a match that has to be won or drawn by Portugal and is a must win for Denmark.

Either way they are both going to the next phase of qualification, only one will be taking the easy path while the other heads straight to the play off pot.

    Key Match:

    Denmark vs Portugal

Group I

10 of 11

Spain is another team already locked in for next summer defending World Cup.

The 2008 European Champions are favored once again for success in the UEFA's major tournament.

Scotland has high hopes of finding a way to join the best European clubs next summer, but will need a victory over Spain to guarantee that.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic only need to draw with Lithuania in order to knock Scotland out in what would be pure frustration for the Celts.

    Key Match:

    Spain vs Scotland

    Lithuania vs Czech Republic

Conclusion

11 of 11

It should be an excellent final day for the group qualification stage of the 2012 European Championships.

Multiple teams are still hoping to secure a chance to make an appearance, while others are hoping to punch their ticket with a Group crown.

We are sure to see a lot of great matches and highlights.
