UFC 136 Results: Instant Analysis and Reaction for Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard
Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard picked up where they left off at UFC 136 and fought hard for four rounds to claim the UFC’s lightweight championship.
First round was much like the first at UFC 125. Maynard had Edgar beat and dropped him with hard uppercuts. This time around though Maynard played to win the rounds.
Second round, Maynard seemed tentative and lacked aggression. Edgar took advantage and put on an offensive that lasted until the fourth round.
In the fourth with Maynard looking tired, Edgar, even though he had been hurt previously in this fight, moved in with impressive footwork and boxing to outstrike Maynard.
Eventually, Edgar clipped Maynard once after a nice sprawl and then went in for the kill. Three strikes later Maynard was down on the mat and three more strikes later, Edgar finished Maynard by fourth round TKO.
Edgar retains his belt and will most likely face the Ben Henderson vs. Clay Guida winner, or he will face current Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez.
Gray Maynard on the other hand may also face Gilbert Melendez or possibly the loser of Henderson and Guida.
All in all, Edgar pulled out the victory in impressive form in an exciting fight to end the card in Houston.
