UFC 136 Results: Nam Phan Gets Revenge Against Leonard Garcia
A highly-anticipated rematch between featherweights Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan graced the UFC 136 pay-per-view card. The pair battled to a split decision in December, with Garcia getting the nod on the scorecards.
Garcia entered this fight likely on thin ice with the promotion. His record was 3-4-1 over his previous eight fights, but the three wins all came by split decision. Two of the fights were considered controversial, including the Phan fight.
Phan battled former WEC champ Mike Brown to decision at UFC 133 in August. Coupled with the Garcia loss, the TUF alum entered the fight with a 0-2 record with the promotion.
The two featherweights started to trade as soon as the fight began. Garcia pressured early. Phan worked the body. A right hand from Phan dropped Garcia and Phan ended up in the top position. Garcia tied up Phan from his back to force a referee standup. Phan connected with a left hook that slowed Garcia’s forward movement. Garcia looked for takedown, but Phan used a whizzer to defend. Phan landed repeated left hooks to the body. A spinning back kick from Garcia missed. A right hand wobbled Garcia. Garcia again looked for a takedown as the round closed, but Phan landed in the top position.
Garcia delivered a number of kicks to start the second. Phan pushed the fight against the fence and landed with a combination. In typical Garcia fashion, he abandoned technique and looked to brawl. Phan again used his left hook to the body and to the head. Jab-cross from Phan. Phan hurt Garcia with another body shot. Phan’s jab kept Garcia from connecting. Phan scored with repeated combos to Garcia’s head. Blood poured from below Garcia’s right eye.
The final round saw Garcia start very aggressively. Garcia delivered combo after combo and landed a left hand that dropped Phan. Garcia teed off along the fence. Phan clinched to recover. An exhausted Garcia ate punch after punch from Phan. Phan scored with a takedown within two minutes left in the fight. After little action, the referee returned the fighters to their feet. Garcia missed on a wild spinning back fist. Garcia looked for a takedown with 30 seconds remaining, but Phan remained standing as the fight went to the scorecards.
All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for the winner Nam Phan.
