UFC 136 Results: Demian Maia Outlasts Jorge Santiago to Win Unanimous Decision
In the second Spike TV bout from UFC 136, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts Demian Maia and Jorge Santiago met to determine who will take next step into contention in the middleweight division.
Maia came into the bout off a loss to Mark Munoz from UFC 131. Santiago was also coming off a loss to Brian Stann. Both were looking to get back on track in this pivotal fight.
The first round in the battle of the BJJ black belts saw each fighter coming out looking to strike. Maia and Santiago both tried to land kicks, but none landed effectively. Maia was able to secure a takedown early in the round, but lost the position when he tried to transition.
When they moved back to their feet, Santiago attacked with a flying knee while Maia had success landing right hands while Santiago was moving forward.
Maia secured a second takedown late in the round. UFC commentator Joe Rogan said Santiago's black belt might be good enough "just to defend," and that was proven to be true.
The second round began with Santiago throwing more kicks. Maia lowered his pressure early and gauged his distance more carefully.
Santiago was able to land some grazing shots halfway through the round before being taken down by Maia, who remained in Santiago's guard for the rest of the round.
The third round began with Maia securing another takedown, but Santiago was able to get up quickly.
The two fighters didn't engage much in the round with strikes, but Santiago did have some success landing grazing right hands. Maia eventually got the takedown again and sat at the rest of the fight on top.
Official Result: Demian Maia defeats Jorge Santiago by Unanimous Decision (30-27 x3)
