Some people are anxiously awaiting January 8, 2009, to finally see the two best teams in college football play the BCS Championship.
I am here to tell you the two best teams in college football will play on December 6, 2008, at 4 p.m. in Atlanta, Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
The winner of that game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Florida Gators will go on to win the BCS National Championship in Miami, Florida, against whoever the BCS system decides to send to Miami.
I'll be honest with you, as an Alabama fan, I believe if we can beat the Florida Gators in the SEC Championship, the BCS Championship is ours for the taking.
The same goes for Florida. If they beat Alabama, they are on their way to their second National Championship under Urban Meyer in three years.
Now I know I will be accused of being a SEC homer, but hear me out.
The SEC has won four out of the 10 BCS Championships. I would submit that the SEC could have won at least three more if the SEC hadn't been shut out by the BCS selection system. That would include 2004 when an undefeated Auburn was excluded from the chance to play for the title.
The SEC has never lost a BCS National Championship Game they were allowed, or should I say invited to play in. No other conference that can make that claim!
Because of the talent on both sides of the ball in the SEC, and the difficulty of playing a SEC schedule, I believe SEC teams hold a distinct advantage over the other teams from lesser conferences when it comes to championship games. The SEC Champion has already walked through the fire as it were, so the heat doesn't bother them.
Now, before all you Big 12 fans start screaming about how good you are, I will say upfront, I agree with you. The Big 12 is the best I have seen it in years, but it is still behind the SEC in one department. Here are some numbers for you number crunchers.
Florida is ranked No.3 in total offense and No.5 in total defense while playing in the toughest conference in the country. Alabama is ranked No.3 in total defense, No.1 in special teams.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma is ranked No.1 in total offense but they are playing in what may be the worse defensive conference in the nation. Oklahoma ranks a pitiful No.61 in total defense right behind Louisiana Tech. That will not get it done it a championship game.
Folks, defense has always won championships.
The best team in the Big 12 in defense ranks a lowly No.21 which is lower than almost half of the SEC which includes some pretty average teams like Auburn and Tennessee. That team is Texas who beat Oklahoma in a head to head match. Coincidence? I don't think so. An average defense, even ranked as low as 21st, can beat a so called great offense.
If Oklahoma couldn't beat Texas, who just has an average defense, how are we to believe they will beat the No.3 or the No.5 defenses in the country?
I know defense is not what the people want to see, but I think watching a great defense is like watching a great pitcher pitch in the World Series. If you understand what you are looking at, it is a beautiful thing!
Everyone knows great pitching wins Championships in baseball. In the game of college football, great defenses wins Championships!
The winner of the SEC Championship game will go on to play in the BCS Championship game. Which ever team wins the SECCG will carry a great defense to Miami? That Defense will win the SEC its fifth BCS National Championship in 11 years.
Whichever Big 12 team the BCS sends to Miami, whether it be Oklahoma or Texas had better learn to play defense in the next 40 days or they won't stand a giraffes chance in a lightning storm against who ever wins this important game!
Tune in December 6 at 4 p.m. EST to see the next BCS National Champion play in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, Georgia!
